Unstoppable Fontes / Forne Win at Hungaroring

Álvaro Fontes and Toni Forné closed with resounding success their participation at the third venue of the Radical European Masters held at the Hungaroring race track, in close proximity to Budapest. They both were the unquestionable center of attention in SR3RS class, driving the Radical SR3 entered by Speed Factory Racing.

On Friday they already finished on top during free practice sessions, and they managed to repeat their success in both qualifying sessions. Forné qualified the Castrol-sponsored car first setting a best lap of 1:48.238 and beating by over half a second James Abbott. Likewise Fontes, despite it was his debut at this circuit, also grabbed pole position time with a lap of 1:48.866 and beating Josef Koller by more than a second. Starting on the pole position, they had a clear goal: to increase immediately the gap to pursuers when race one got underway. After an excellent opening stint carried out by Forné, beating even Abbott – last year´s champion-, the Catalan handed over to Fontes and, after fifty minutes, his teammate claimed a well-deserved win. Equally, on Sunday, Fontes and Forné dominated race two but with the Andalusian racer driving in the first part and Forné at the end. Both results were similar, they finished more than twenty seconds ahead of their rivals.

“It was high time that this sort of weekend happened. We are able to top each and every season, including both races. Hungaroring I already knew quite well from my Megane Trophy years. It is a very technical one, narrow and with no room to make mistakes. We snatched both pole positions, beating Abbott among others”, Forné explained and adding that “we could pull away from the pack in both races, and our race pace was good enough to take two comfortable wins after pit stops”. Similarly Fontes summarized that “this was unforgettable. It was a completely new racing track for me, but my adaption was pretty quick indeed. We proved our speed and reliability from the very beginning and our rivals were left with no options. Both triumphs reinforce our lead in the drivers´ standings, our goal for Hungary”.

Now the championship, after the summer break, resumes at Silverstone at 16-17 August.
