2014 Kartdrome SWS Ramadan Challenge Round 1

Emirati driver Ali Al Mansoori was in sizzling form as he conquered hot conditions and a star-studded field on his way to victory in Round 2 of the 2014 SWS Ramadan Challenge at the Dubai Kartdrome on Monday night.

With temperatures in the forties and a record field of drivers, that included the who-is-who of leisure karting, it was always going to be an evening of tough and close racing.

After six preliminary heats, where each driver had two opportunities to score points to determine their grid start for the Super Final, it was Ramez Azzam who had the honour of starting from pole position, with Al Mansoori beside him on the front row. Behind the pair, on row two were, the previus week's Round 1 winner Rami Azzam along with Mohammed Al Mutawaa, and starting from row three were Atef Al Barwani and Hussain Umid Ali.

From the go it was Ramez Azzam who set the early pace with Al Mansoori glued to his bumper, the pair managing to edge out an early lead over Al Barwani and Al Mutawaa who worked together in tandem and pursued relentlessly, followed by the rest of the pack.

With the top ten circulating in the 91 seconds lap time zone, there was little between the top ten. However at the front the leaders were edging away, and midway through the race Al Mansoori pounced to snatch the lead from Azzam, where he stayed until the chequered flag on lap 12 - the duo finishing first and second respectively, a mere 0.182 of a second separating them as they crossed the finish line.

Al Mutawaa managed to get by Al Barwani and with a handful of laps to go was reeling in the leaders, but there were simply not enough laps in the race for him to challenge them. His reward for the hard graft was third place and the fastest lap of the night.

Al Barwani held on to fourth with Saeed Al Falasi in his slipstream as they crossed the line. Anas Al Halabi was sixth, ahead of Rami Azzam in seventh, Hussain Umid Ali eigth, Abigail Birch ninth and Sam Zian rounding out the top ten.

Special mention to, Dubai school girl, Birch who only made it into the Super Final by virtue of finishing fourth in the Pre-Final. Starting 19th she drove a well calculated race to finish ninth overall, and in the process beating some of the acknowledged top guns of local leisure karting.

Carsten Winter took top honours in the Masters class ahead of Bruno De Champris in second and Adrian Jones third.

Kartdrome assistant manager David Bright summed up the evening of racing: "We are really proud to have been able to accommodate the 48 drivers who entered, which is also our biggest entry ever in SWS racing at the Kartdrome. The racing was of the highest order despite the heat and challenging conditions. There is very little to separate the top drivers and the championship is wide open with two rounds remaining."

The third and penultimate round of the 2014 Dubai Kartdrome SWS Ramadan Challenge takes place on Monday night, 14 July 2014.

2014 Dubai Kartdrome SWS Ramadan Challenge Info:
