Merzouga Rally Welcomes The Team Canada

Following the great experience that Patrick Trahan had in 2012, racing the Merzouga Rally on board of Tacita T-Race, the first electric endure bike made in Italy, the Canadian rider will join the Merzouga Rally 2014 with a whole team from Canada. We have interviewed Patrick Trahan about this fascinating

“I have been doing Rally Raid for the past 13 years. My dream was always to bring a Canadian team to enjoy my favorite passion; Rally raid! After riding the Merzouga Rally in 2012, I have talked to some friends and convince them to join me in the Merzouga Rally 2014. It did not need lots of arm twisting. The interesting fact is that all our riders will be accompanied by their partners who will participate in the assistance as well. I choose the Merzouga Rally to bring a Canadian team for the first time because of its format and it’s easy to have our assistance. It is also the best introduction for rally raid with days that are not too long. Finally, if the riders miss few waypoints or skip a day, they can still race and finish the rally".

the Team
“Our team is compose of 5 riders, 1 Mecanic and 4 assistants
Claude Auchu: A good friend of mine who rode with me in our Motoadventours ride in Morocco and got the Desert Virus at that moment. He did participate to some Canadian Navigation rally and he is actively training and preparing all summer in Quebec for his first Rally Raid experience. I am sure it won’t be his last. He will ride a KTM 690 .

Dominic Lemaire: A very experienced enduro rider who has participated in many Canadian Enduro and Hares Scramble Championship. He was selected to represent Canada at the second GS Trophy in South Africa. He is also the Canadian distributor of Touratech, so he rides a lot for living. This year he went to Dubai to train for sand and dune riding. I am sure he will be very competitive. He will ride a KTM 690

Jean Lecuyer: Another experience enduro rider. He has raced in Canadian enduro championship, WEC series, some race in USA as well. He just finished a big travel across the Americas with Chantale Cournoyer (wich will be part of the team) recently on big adventure bikes. They wrote a nice book about it. I do know him enough to know that he will train to be competitive and will give it best to achieve a good ranking. He will ride a KTM EXC500

René Cloutier: It will be his first international racing experience but he has participated in many off road events, including GS Challenge many times and The Orange Crush (navigation rally) that saw also the participation of Cyril Després. He his a BMW fan and knows how to ride them very well. He maneuvers big GS1200 like if they were trial bikes. I am sure with a decent rally bike he will have no problem in the dunes! He his looking forward to his first rally raid. He will ride a BMW 450

Patrick Trahan (team Captain): Started his first rally in 1998 with the Atlas rally, became the first Canadian to participate in a rally raid. Then 2000, he became the first Canadian to participate in Dakar. He returned in 2001, where his engine broke at the midpoint. After he raced, the Morocco, Dubai, Pharaons rallye. He also in 2007 race the Baja1000 race. He returned to Dakar in 2010 to finish this time with a 55th overall and 14th in his class. He has worked many years a motorcycle, now he works with his partner in life at Motoadventours. Morocco is his home, he has ridden in Morocco for more than 12 years so he feels very confident in dunes. This year he will ride a special HONDA CRF250L

How was the experience of the Merzouga Rally on board of an electric bike?
"I was contacted by Edo Mossi (Merzouga’s boss) to talk to a team that wanted to test an electric prototype and become the first electric bike to finish a rallye. I jumped on the occasion for sure to work with Tacita and race the T-Race. I became the first rider to ride and electric bike in a rally. At first it was strange to ride in silent, but after a few kilometers of rally riding, I got use to it and actually appreciated a lot. The dune riding in silent was actually quite the magical experience. We did test many engines and many time I ran out of battery and had to wait for the assistance to bring me battery. The bike perform amazingly, but of course the battery was not quite enough for the dunes. But it was testing and the team was very happy about my test pilot job and they even invited me to work with them in the future."
