Thompson Prepares For Wild Ride In Canada

Following a dominant race weekend at Watkins Glen International where he won both Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama races, Colin Thompson is ready to take on another classic North American race track: Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

More commonly referred to as “Mosport,” Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is a 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course located 50 miles outside of Toronto. This track has long been a favorite amongst race drivers and Thompson is no exception.

“Growing up, listening to cool stories from my dad about racing there, it built up to become a dream track to me,” Thompson said. “Last year was the first time I raced there and it really lived up to its expectations. It was really cool and I had an absolute blast driving it.”

The high-speed corners and flow of the circuit are eye-opening to say the least and require a steady set of hands and nerves.

“I think all the fun is in Turn 2,” Thompson said. “It’s such a high speed corner, but you lose all your grip. As you’re exiting, just before you think you’re going to fly off the track, all the grip comes back and the car catches. You go way quicker through that corner than you think you should physically be able to. It’s just one of those unbelievable corners in racing like the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca or Turn One at Spa.”

Thompson is still riding high after scoring his first two GT3 Cup race wins at Watkins Glen. The wins have boosted his confidence and given him a four-point lead in the Championship.

“All year we kept talking about needing to get that first win, because we’d had second place after second place,” Thompson said. “We needed to get a few wins under our belt and I knew as soon as I got the first one out the way, the rest should come a lot easier. It was nice because I got my first one in a real hard-fought battle on the last lap and the second race I was able to duplicate it. I’m hoping to bring that same confidence and ability to Canada.”

Just because he’s earned those elusive first wins doesn’t mean he’s lost any of his drive to continue winning and scoring points in the remaining eight rounds of the 2014 season.

“I’m not going to relax all year,” Thompson said. “I’m not on edge, but I’m just ready and focused more so than I’ve ever been. There’s nothing I take more seriously than racing. I’m there to have fun, but I’m also there to win.”

The first of two GT3 Cup races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is slated for Friday, July 11, at 5:40 pm ET. The second half of the doubleheader will go green Saturday, July 12, at 10:10 am ET. Live timing and scoring is available at IMSA.com, while streaming video can be found at FansChoice.TV.
