Sachsenring Weekend Kicks Off With Antonelli 5th And Bastianini 13th

Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3 riders Niccolò Antonelli and Enea Bastianini were able to begin their German Grand Prix weekend unaffected by the predicted rain as sunshine and warm weather set the scene for today’s first two practice sessions.

Antonelli was consistently among the fastest riders, ending the combined classification with the fifth fastest time - 1’27”906 - 0.604 seconds from first, Australian Jack Miller. The 18-year-old Italian rider will aim to improve his performance on the second sector of the track ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying session, in order to further close the gap from the top.

His teammate, Enea Bastianini, finished the day with the 13th fastest time, 1’28”278: the young debutant, who had a slight crash as he lost the front going into Turn 1 at the beginning of the morning session, is still learning how to better interpret the twisty layout of the Sachsenring, and tomorrow he will try to improve his riding style in the last two sectors of the track.

NICCOLO' ANTONELLI (5th - 1'27"906)
“I’m satisfied with the result of this first day of practice: compared to what happened during the other Grand Prix on Friday, today we are a little closer to the front and we also have some ideas in order to improve; this obviously doesn’t mean that we will succeed, but tomorrow we will give our maximum to get even closer to the top. Today I struggled especially in the second sector of the track, so tomorrow we will try to make some progress in that particular area”.

ENEA BASTIANINI (13th - 1'28"278)
“This morning’s session didn’t go really well... Unfortunately I crashed on the third lap and although I was able to rejoin the track, I didn’t understand much. In the afternoon session I had to regain confidence, but in the final stages I felt better, but there is still room for improvement. In particular, I have yet to figure out how to interpret this track, which however is not one of my favourites. Throughout the day we have improved so much in the second and the third sector, but those two are still the areas of the track where I struggle more. Anyway, tomorrow we will try our maximum to get a good position on the grid”.

“Niccolò made a very positive first day of practice, thus confirming his good; he did a good job and his gap from the fastest is limited. Overall the situation is not bad at all, although of course we will have to improve if we want to be competitive again tomorrow. On this track, moreover, it’s important to start from the front, because although there are some places where it’s possible to overtake, it’s easy to lose time in the early laps of the race behind slower riders, then it’s very difficult to recover. Enea unfortunately had a slight crash in the first free practice session and therefore he lost a bit of precious time, but all in all is his lap times are in line with our expectations”.
