Storylines/Things To Watch For
Major League: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. The Majors Tour replaces what was previously called “National” SCCA racing, split into a season-long championship in four geographic Conferences. This weekend’s event at GingerMan Raceway, rounds seven and eight of the season, has over 130 drivers on the entry list.

SCCA Club Racers – The Best In The Country: There are lots of amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with the SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race.

Winding Through The Season: The Northern Conference moves past the halfway point this weekend at GingerMan Raceway. The two-day, doubleheader event is Rounds Seven and Eight of the season-long championship. Drivers count their best eight point-scoring races on the way to a Majors Championship, meaning drivers could, conceivably, wrap up their season in Western Michigan.

Diversity: Attending an SCCA Majors race means that you’ll see any type of race car that you can image, from swarms of Formula Vees or Spec Miatas to the lightning quick Formula Atlantics or thundering GT-1 machines. There may not be a more diverse group than GT-2, however.

This weekend’s entry list features Porsche GT3 Cup cars, a Dodge Viper, a Sunbeam Tiger, and a Chevrolet Camaro. Each of those makes is a class contender, making it all the more interesting to see how it plays out on the track.

Spec Madness: The Spec Racer Ford and Spec Miata classes are typically two of the largest at any give SCCA Majors race weekend, and GingerMan is no exception. With more than 20 in each class’s respective entry list, the battle will be both up front and throughout the field for valuable points.

To make it more competitive, the top three point scorers in Spec Miata – Voytek Burdzy, Michael Novak, and David Bednarz – and three out of four in Spec Racer Ford – Scott Rettich, Matt Gray, and Jim Marinangel – are all on the entry list.
