Camaro Z28R At Ctmp: Pole Position For Andrew Davis, Stevenson Motorsports

The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R continued its strong performance in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge’s Grand Sport (GS) class Friday with a second consecutive pole position in its debut year. Stevenson Motorsports’ Andrew Davis was the fastest qualifier at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the No. 6 Camaro with a lap of 1:27.591 (101.065 mph).

Three of the Camaro Z/28.Rs will make up the front two rows of Saturday’s 1:15 p.m. ET race that marks the seventh round of this year’s Continental Tire series. Matt Bell was third in Stevenson Motorsports’ No. 9 Camaro Z/28.R at 1:27.727 (100.909 mph). Eric Curran, the pole-winner at Watkins Glen, was fourth Friday in CKS Autosport’s No. 01 Camaro at 1:27.798 (100.827 mph).

"Congratulations to Andrew Davis and the Stevenson Motorsports team on Friday's pole position in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge," said Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet’s Program Manager for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge." The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R effort definitely has strong momentum following a victory and pole position at Watkins Glen two weeks ago. Three of the top four positions gives us ideal spots to fight at the front of the grid for a third victory this season and increase our lead in the GS manufacturer championship."

A victory by Davis and Robin Liddell at Watkins Glen moved Chevrolet into the GS championship lead. The pairing also won at Sebring. The Camaro Z/28.R also has claimed positions on the class podium at Laguna Seca and Lime Rock Park.

TALK ABOUT YOUR POLE RUN.

"Our Stevenson Camaro was working really well. I was happy with it. The changes we made leading into qualifying were great. Unfortunately heading into Turn 2, I must have been pretty close (to going off-track with all four wheels). I thought I was still on but it must have been too close for comfort as far as the officials were concerned, so they took that lap away. I had to put my head down and do another one. Luckily I had built a gap (from other cars) so I knew I would have two laps because that was all the team was going to give me anyway. Thankfully we were able to put the second lap in there and it was even a little quicker. I’m just so proud of the team. They worked so hard and I worked really hard as well to get this pole for the new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R and the first pole for this Stevenson program with this new car. I’m excited. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s race."

TWO-TENTHS BETWEEN POLE AND P4 SO IT IS CLOSE BETWEEN THE THREE CAMAROS. HOW ARE YOU FEELING FOR TOMORROW?

"I feel great. It just goes to show how good these Chevy Camaro Z/28.R’s are. We have got three of them in the top four. This is awesome. What an exciting race track, a great place and I’m so excited that Ron Fellows brought us up here and got IMSA here to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. These Camaros are just so strong. They are really good. They were really good at Watkins Glen and congrats to Stevenson for winning there. We got the pole and were strong all race. It looks like those three Camaros are going to be running up front most of the race here. I would love to bring them home 1-2-3. It’s very similar here to Watkins Glen in a lot of ways - real sweeping turns, very similar setup chassis-wise from track to track. This track doesn’t have quite as much grip as Watkins Glen, but still a cool race track and still very similar."
