At the drop of the green flag on Saturday, the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda BMW 128i shared by Terry Borcheller and Mike LaMarra will start in 12th position while the No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i of Greg Strelzoff and Connor Bloum will begin from 22nd position after locking in times during Friday’s 15-minute midday qualifying session for the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance.

For their first run on the scenic 2.459-mile Canadian circuit, the team had two practice sessions prior to qualifying to prep their twin BMW machines and they quickly made their mark, rolling off the truck fast and finishing the first practice session in third and fourth positions in the No. 23 and No. 22 respectively.

While Borcheller was the only driver familiar with the track prior to the weekend, the other three drivers quickly became acquainted with the high-speed course, which was made clear as they shaved valuable time off of their laps from one practice to the next.

Ultimately, qualifications ended up as a mixed bag for the Burton crew, as a gearbox issue allowed just one lap for Strelzoff in the No. 22 car. But in spite of his lack of qualifying laps, Strelzoff still managed to lay down a lap time fast enough to secure him a starting spot equal to his car number and almost a full second faster than the following car.

In the No. 23 BMW, LaMarra finished qualifications happy to have some less traffic-filled track time.

“It felt really good to just get out there and have clear track to run on,” said a pleased LaMarra after qualifying the No. 23 car on the sixth row of the starting grid for Saturday’s race. “The guys worked so hard and gave me a great car and then even improved it for qualifications. I actually felt like there was even a little more in the car, but I was still learning the track a little bit and I got caught up in some traffic on a hot lap. But I’m very happy and looking forward to the race!”

“All of the guys have worked really hard and the cars actually rolled off the trucks pretty fast here,” said Team Manager Keith Burton. “So that is really good. And this track is really fast and new to Mike (LaMarra), Greg (Strelzoff) and Connor (Bloum), but they have all done a really good job of learning it fast. Qualifying was a bit of a disappointment for the No. 22 car, but Greg (Strelzoff) did a great job with what he had and we are still feeling confident for the race tomorrow.”

The 2.5-hour race is set to go green Saturday at 1:15 PM (ET) and will be streamed LIVE on imsa.com. It will be broadcast on Sunday, July 20 at 10:00 AM (ET).
