Moscow Disappointment For Paffett

A frustrating weekend for Gary Paffett as his Euronics Mercedes team took to Russia’s Moscow Raceway for their 5th race.

With good weather conditions, Paffett had a promising start for the weekend as he came 9th in second practice just before the qualifying. However qualifying did not go as well as his practice session and saw the 33- year-old line up in 21st place.

Gary said, “Qualifying was very disappointing from my perspective. Second practice was OK, but conditions changed ahead of the qualifying and that affected the car’s balance, which then caused us problems in qualifying..”

Sunday was race day for Gary and his team, starting 20th on the grid. As a three-space penalty was given to Martin Tomczyk in Norisring for a collision with Paffett, the Brit started in 20th as Tomczyk goes down to 22nd. Being 20th on the grid, was a challenge to see how well Paffett could do from the lower than expected grid position. With the annoyance of two safety cars, the British racer managed to finish the Moscow race in 16th position, climbing 4 positions higher than his starting position. Paffett finished ahead of BMW’s Joey Hand and home hero Vitaly Petrov, who were the last to be classified as having completed the race distance.

Gary quote for Sunday’s race, “The result was obviously disappointing. Qualifying didn’t go well, but our performance in the race wasn’t bad in comparison to the other Mercedes drivers. Unfortunately, I was unlucky with both safety car deployments. The decision to start on the prime tyres turned out to be unlucky, because everyone else had already stopped by the time the safety car came out. Anyway, we learn as we go along.”

Gary Paffett will next be racing for DTM from August the 1st to the 3rd at The Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg, Austria.
