Three Top Ten Races for Blomqvist in Moscow

Tom Blomqvist was placed in the top ten in all 3 races this weekend, as the FIA Formula 3 European Championship raced at the Moscow Raceway in Russia. With Blomqvist’s best result being in race 2, in which he finished on the podium in 3rd position behind Esteban Ocon and Antonio Fuoco.

With good weather conditions, Friday started the Moscow event off with the first qualifying session. Blomqvist started off positively as the 20-year-old finished the first qualifying in 3rd position. Race 1 took place on the Saturday morning, which saw Blomqvist fall into place behind Ocon who led away from pole position and was to lead throughout, leaving Blomqvist with pressure from Verstappen behind. On lap 2, Verstappen had found his way past Blomqvist putting him in 4th position, which is where he ended the race, again scoring solid points.

After race one on the Saturday, they were set to qualify for race two, in which Blomqvist achieved 3rd position. Sunday morning saw race 2 for Blomqvist where he maintained his grid slot and kept a small gap between him and Fuoco the whole of the race which gave Blomqvist another strong finish and visit to the podium.

Blomqvist said about his race 2, “Being back on the podium after two weekends that didn’t go so well is nice. In the races, we were always good but we sometimes struggled in qualifying. That is also the thing on which we still have to work. In this race, I had no chance to mount a challenge to Antonio, because at this track, overtaking is very difficult.”

Qualifying for race 3 saw Blomqvist finish in 2nd, position, which was very promising for his final race. Blomqvist finished with just a 00.056 gap between him and fastest driver Esteban Ocon.

For the last race of the Moscow weekend, race 3 had Blomqvist start 2nd on the grid. With a safety car deployed soon after the race had started, Ocon took the led with Blomqvist behind. When the race resumed on lap 5, three drivers received a drive-through penalty. Due to jump-starts, second-placed Tom Blomqvist, Santino Ferrucci and Sean Gelael each had to take one detour through the pit lane. This saw Blomqvist take seventh place on the final lap and finish inside the top ten after a battle with several cars to overtake to make up the loss of time from the drive through penalty.

Tom Blomqvist will continue to race with FIA Formula 3, and will next be racing from August the 1st to the 3rd at The Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg, Austria.
