Pla, Yacaman Dominate En Route To Tudor Championship Victory At Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada - Gustavo Yacaman started the No. 42 OAK Racing Morgan/Nissan from the pole Sunday in the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance and never lost the position as he and co-driver Olivier Pla dominated to win their first race in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Yacaman and Pla led all 133 laps in the event, beating the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing Corvette DP of Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante by 7.886 seconds. It was the largest margin of victory in the Prototype class this season.

"We knew coming in that it would be a track that would be more suitable for us than other tracks," said Pla. "Gustavo [Yacaman] gave me a gap and I worked on managing it to the end. It was a perfect race for the team."

It was the third consecutive podium result for the team after a third-place finish at Detroit Belle Isle and a second-place run at Watkins Glen.

Westbrook closed the deficit to Pla from 24 seconds to 7.886 seconds in the closing minutes, but settled for second. Brothers Jordan and Ricky Taylor finished third in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP.

In the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class, Kuno Wittmer started from the pole and maintained that position for the first 54 minutes of the race before encountering a lapped car that forced him off track. Wittmer was able to bring the No. 93 SRT Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R back on the racing surface with minimal cosmetic damage, but the damage to his race-winning hopes was already done. The incident allowed Jan Magnussen’s No. 3 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R to take the lead and Antonio Garcia never looked back in bringing the car to victory lane.

"Things are going really well at the moment," said Magnussen, following the team’s fourth consecutive win. "By no means is it easy. It’s so difficult out there; you have to be so precise. We have to work the traffic, because that’s where we make the gain."

Wittmer and Jonathan Bomarito finished second in the GTLM class.

On the penultimate lap of the race, Kevin Estre was in the lead in the GT Daytona (GTD) class until Turn 3, when a GTLM car was attempting to overtake and made slight contact with Estre’s No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America. The contact allowed Jeroen Bleekemolen to take the lead and keep it for the final two minutes for the race win.

It was the first win for the No. 33 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT GT3-R co-driven by Ben Keating.

"This is also our first podium," said Keating. "We had our fair share of tough luck and we felt like we were due. We have always been a little down on top speed, but in the sweeping corners here, it really suits our car."

The TUDOR Championship returns in two weeks for the Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That race, which features all four TUDOR Championship classes, is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at 5:45 p.m. ET.(FOX Sports 1).
