Brothers Rami and Ramez Azzam triumphed at Round 3 of the 2014 SWS Ramadan Challenge at the Kartdrome on Monday night, and thus became the first siblings to share the top step and second step of the podium in an official SWS sprint race at Dubai's most popular karting venue.

Starting from pole position Rami Azzam extended his championship points lead, with only one round left in the series, after driving a well calculated Super Final where he and his brother, Ramez, pulled away from the pack early on in the race. Thereafter they circulated nose-to-tail, setting a blistering pace in stifling hot conditions that prevailed on the night.

They crossed the finish line in tandem with Rami Azzam taking maximum points, a mere 0.197 of a second ahead of his younger brother Ramez who claimed the fastest lap of the race in the process.

Azzam said after his victory, "This win was important for the championship standings because my main rivals were behind and caught up in the traffic and their own battles. Going into the final round on top of the standings is a boost and I look forward to next Monday night."

Over 13 seconds adrift of the Azzam duo was a huge battle for third place where the likes of Atef Al Barwani, Anas Al Halabi, Ali Al Mansoori, Mohammed Al Mutawaaa, Hussain Umid Alis, Sam Zian and Imran Akhlaq slugged it out for that final podium spot.

The bunch traded positions on just about every corner, no quarter given or asked, delivering arguably the closest, and perhaps fiercest, on track battle of this 2014 edition of the Ramadan Challenge.

In the end Akhlaq escaped the 'brawl' to claim his first ever SWS podium finish at the Kartdrome, with Zian in fourth ahead of Umid Ali, Al Mutawaa, Al Mansoori, Al Halabi, Al Barwani and Saeed Al Falasi rounding out the top ten. Less than three seconds separated the half dozen drivers as they crossed the finish line.

The fourth and final round of the 2014 SWS Ramadan Challenge takes place on Monday, 21 July at the Kartdrome, where the title will be decided.
