Taggart Back in Action for Big VIR Weekend

Taggart Autosport will contest the Ultimate Track Car Challenge (UTCC) and NASA races at its home track ,VIRginia International Raceway, this coming weekend. Team driver and sports car veteran Jim Taggart will drive his Porsche 911 GT3R, normally raced in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships.

The UTCC is a 50-car “run what you have” style competition taking place on Friday, July 18. The rules are simple, according to NASA and sponsor Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, if the car passes NASA’s safety protocols, it can compete. Drivers then have time to set their personal best lap, meaning it’s an all out competition for the fastest lap.

A full entry list for the UTCC group is posted here.

As for Taggart’s monstrous Porsche GT3R machine, all performance restrictions such as added weight and air restrictor regulations normally set for Pirelli World Challenge will come off, most likely marking the first time the car has run in full-bore competition mode in North America.

“It’s an exciting event, having track and race cars from all over the country competing for the Magazine’s top prize,” said Taggart .”Given the power, downforce and handling of this incredible Porsche, I have hopes to compete for fastest Porsche, maybe one of the fastest cars. However, looking at the list of competitors showing up, it will be a tough battle. You have everything from a brand new Viper, sports racers, to prototypes. It will be exciting to see how our Porsche competes.

“This year will be the first since VIR’s upgraded track surface and paddock. Our experience has shown the new surface and runoffs are not only safer enabling more passing areas, but the grip on the track is superior to the old surface,” continued Taggart. “Congratulations to VIR and crew for making this happen for all of the competitors.”

Adding to more track time for Taggart and his Porsche will be Saturday and Sunday’s festivities at VIR, a full-on NASA weekend for race cars with the Porsche competing in the Super Unlimited Class.

The team will get some much-needed track time prior to a huge World Challenge weekend at the start of August at Mid-Ohio, August 1-3.

Among other activities includes Taggart’s Local Motors Rally Fighter build, which saw the Rally Fighter come to life with its first engine start in early July.

But all eyes are on Friday’s UTCC and a potential fast lap at VIR. Stay tuned for weekend updates on the Taggart Autosport Facebook and Twitter.
