Rising Star Racing Duo Ready for Doubleheader in Toronto

Fresh off an impressive run from the rear of the pack all the way to his first IndyCar podium of the season, Rising Star Racing driver Josef Newgarden now looks forward to two more chances to taste the champagne for the annual Verizon IndyCar Series doubleheader ‘Two in Toronto’ race event in Canada this weekend.

After qualifying at the back of the 22-car field at Iowa last weekend, Newgarden set to work in his No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing machine, making his way forward during the Iowa Corn Indy 300. An excellent call by team strategist, Andy O’Gara in the final laps of the race saw Newgarden pit for fresh tires, which gave him the extra edge to run all the way up to the podium to tie his best IndyCar-career race result of second.

The Rising Star Racing mentor is now ready to take on the bumpy 11-turn, 1.75-mile circuit through the streets of downtown Toronto. Hampered by mechanical issues in last year’s event, his best result to date on the tight and technical circuit was 11th in Race 2 last year. But Newgarden feels confident in more positive results this year, especially carrying the positive momentum earned in Iowa.

“Toronto has a lot of concrete on every apex, which makes it pretty slippery and tricky to try and set up the car,” said Newgarden. “You want to be able to just float through the corner because of the concrete. Trying to achieve the balance at which you do that is the goal. It’s exciting for IndyCar to be heading out of the United States. There are a lot of IndyCar fans in the Toronto area that understand the history. It’s nostalgic and one of the most prestigious street course races in series history.”

Fellow Rising Star Racing driver Spencer Pigot will also be back in action around the streets of Toronto in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge Canada in his No. 21 Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911. For his trip to Canada, Pigot is also packing plenty of positive momentum following his double podium finish in Rounds 3 and 4 of the GT3 Cup Challenge as well as a win in the Pro Mazda series in Houston.

“I'm looking forward to heading back to Toronto,” said Pigot. “I had a lot of fun driving there in Pro Mazda last year, and it's going to be very different in the Porsche. Hopefully we will have a strong weekend and be fighting for the win in both races.”

The trip north of the border will be a busy one for both Rising Star Racing drivers. Newgarden and Pigot will both participate in two practice sessions ahead of their separate qualifications. Pigot will qualify early Saturday July 19th with Race 1 going green at 12:30 PM (ET) and Race 2 to follow on Sunday at 1:20 PM (ET).

IndyCar qualifying for Race 1 will be held on July 19th starting at 10:00 AM (ET) with the drop of the green flag at 3:45 PM (ET). Then it will be rinse and repeat for Newgarden as the schedule is the same for Race 2 on July 20th. Both races will be broadcast LIVE on NBC Sports Network.
