Status GP On Top In Hockenheim Free Practice

Status Grand Prix drivers Richie Stanaway and Nick Yelloly ended free practice for this weekend’s GP3 Series races at Hockenheim in first and third positions on the timesheets.

The 45-minute session preceding the German Grand Prix support races featured a Status GP car on top for most of the duration. Englishman Yelloly headed the times on old hard-compound Pirelli P Zero tyres carried over from the last round at Silverstone. Then New Zealander Stanaway went quickest on the fresh soft-compound rubber mandated for the Hockenheim weekend.

The session continued Status GP’s good form, following Stanaway’s win from Yelloly last time out at Silverstone. Stanaway currently lies third in the championship, with Yelloly sixth and Status GP second in the teams’ standings.

Mexican GP3 rookie Alfonso Celis Jr also showed some strong pace. Although the 17-year-old finished the session in 21st place, his sector times show that he was capable of 11th position had he put them together on the same lap.

Qualifying is on Saturday morning at 0945, with the first race following at 1720 and race two on Sunday at 0925.

Driver quotes:

Richie Stanaway
“It was a reasonable lap, but free practice was all about finding the information. With the German Grand Prix alternating between the Nurburgring and Hockenheim, it’s the first time that this generation of GP3 car has run here. So everyone was rolling out and collecting data, and getting a feel for what’s required. We collected the information we need and we’re in a very good position. We also needed to get a read on the tyres, because it’s very hot here, but the session solidified what we expected.”

Nick Yelloly
“We were quick on old tyres and that put us P1 for quite a while. That was good, and then we made a change and matched the time on the same tyres – which were now older – so that was encouraging too. On new tyres it was a bit of a scrappy lap – you only get one lap at the peak of the tyres and I was too cautious in the first sector, and in the last corner I caught a backmarker. But all in all it’s very encouraging and as a team we’re looking good – I’ve got plenty left in the bank for qualifying.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“It felt like a good session, with a lot of learning, and we found out a lot of stuff. I didn’t put my sectors together but I’m calm because I know what I can do – it’s not like I’m in a rush now! We took another step and I did what the team asked me to, which was to take care of the tyres. So that set is still good and I’m looking forward to qualifying.”
