2014 NHRA: Schumacher Holds Provisional Top Fuel Pole In Denver's Thin Air, Capps Leads DSR Funny Cars In MOPAR Mile-High Nationals

Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team conquered the mountain Friday night and hold the provisional No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying spot in the MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver.

Schumacher, the seven-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion, with crew chief Mike Green and assistant Neal Strausbaugh produced a track-record time of 3.823 seconds at 314.09 mph in the second session in the thin air of the mile-high track.

Schumacher, who is ranked fourth in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series standings, could earn the 73rd pole of his career if his time holds after Saturday's two qualifying sessions heading to the following day's championship eliminations.

Schumacher won titles at Bandimere in 2005 and 2008 and has been the event runner-up five times, but has never earned the No. 1 qualifying position although the holds the record for most Top Fuel poles in NHRA history.

In Funny Car, Ron Capps continues to pace DSR after posting the best time among the quartet.

Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane posted their best time of the day with a night-time pass in 4.087 seconds (311.92) for the provisional No. 5 qualifying position.

Capps is ranked third in the series standings after being the runner-up at the last Mello Yello event two weeks ago at Norwalk in northern Ohio and winning his only title of the year on June 22 at Epping, N.H.

Close behind Capps is teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. in the Make-A-Wish Dodge, who is sixth with a best time of 4.102 (308.21).

Matt Hagan, flying the colors of the HEMI 426 50th Anniversary Tribute Funny Car, sits eighth while Jack Beckman in the Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car ranks eleventh.

The MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals is the first stop of the annual Western Swing with three races in three weeks. After Denver, the Swing shifts to Sonoma, Calif., and closes with a stop near Seattle.
