Status GP Ace Yelloly Fourth At Hockenheim

Status Grand Prix’s Nick Yelloly kept up his 100 per cent record of points finishes by taking fourth in the first GP3 Series race at Hockenheim.

The Englishman was third on the grid, but got boxed in at the second corner while challenging series leader Alex Lynn, and was demoted to fourth by Emil Bernstorff.

Yelloly kept pace for as long as he could with Lynn and Bernstorff, but an engine problem meant he was forced to nurse the car to the finish – while keeping up a strong pace - in an excellent drive.

After heading Friday’s free practice, team-mate Richie Stanaway unfortunately lost his own 100 per cent points record. Bad luck with traffic in qualifying left the New Zealander seventh on the grid, and he got delayed at the first two corners, dropping him to ninth.

Stanaway pulled off a fine move on Matheo Tuscher to take eighth, and moved right onto the tail of Jimmy Eriksson. As he tried to work a way past the Swede, they were caught by Riccardo Agostini. The Italian's move on Stanaway at the hairpin ended with a collision, causing misaligned steering to Stanaway's car and accentuating his tyre wear. He struggled manfully to the finish but had dropped to 13th by the time he reached the chequered flag.

The results mean Yelloly strengthens his sixth place in the championship, one position behind Stanaway, and maintains Status GP's second spot in the teams' standings.

Mexican GP3 rookie Alfonso Celis Jr started the race from 15th on the grid. He lost ground in the opening-lap melee, and then a collision with Ryan Cullen on the next lap put the 17-year-old up onto two wheels and out of the race with deranged right-rear suspension.

The second race, a curtain raiser to the German Grand Prix, starts on Sunday at 0925.

Driver quotes:

Nick Yelloly
“I’m really pleased with that – it’s one of the best races I’ve ever driven. I was trying to pass Lynn on the first lap and my inexperience – it was my first-ever race at Hockenheim – got me boxed in so Bernstorff passed me. I kept their pace but I had a problem from lap three that got worse and worse. In the end I was hardly using sixth gear – the engine just wasn’t pulling. I was on the limit in the corners, making no mistakes, and our pace was pretty good.”

Richie Stanaway
“I lost a lot of ground at the start - the guy in front of me on the grid pretty much parked it at Turn 1, and that ruined my first lap. Then I got squeezed up on the apex at Turn 2, which ruined my exit and lost me even more time. I was happy with the move on Tuscher, but not so happy with the move by Agostini.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“It's been a very tough day - there's not much I can say. This has been very frustrating, but that's how it is - that's motorsport and I've just got to take the best out of tomorrow and try to learn from these situations. I was already radioing the guys that I needed to pit because I felt I had a throttle problem. But then the clash ended my race early.”
