KVSH Racing's Bourdais Captures Pole For Honda Indy Toronto Race No. 1

KVSH Racing driver Sebastien Bourdais captured his first pole since 2007 then never got a chance to see what he could do in the race because inclement weather forced today's Honda Indy Toronto Race No. 1 to be postponed until tomorrow.

Bourdais began the day with a spectacular qualifying effort this morning. On his last qualifying lap he recorded a time of 58.9479 seconds (107.179 mph) on the 1.75-mile, 11-turn downtown temporary street circuit, which vaulted him past Helio Castroneves and Will Power and put the No. 11 Team HYDROXYCUT - KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone car on the pole for what was scheduled to be an 85-lap race. It was Bourdais first pole since Assen, Belgium in 2007, the 32nd of his career and his first true one in an IndyCar (his previous 31 came while competing in the Champ Car World Series from 2004 - 2007).

"It's been six years. It has been a long-time coming, or coming back. It is a great feeling. I thought the call by the team to come in was a big mistake but Jimmy (Vasser) obviously saw things from pit lane that I didn't. I did a fast lap and still had fuel for one more lap and more pace in the car, but we were going to run out of fuel before we were going to run out of tires. The guys decided to bring me in, put in more fuel and put on another set of tires. That was a risky move; but it paid off. The Hydroxycut machine was really fast today."

Unfortunately, the 35-year-old Frenchman never got a chance to see what he could do in the race because steady and persistent rain made the track unsafe in the eyes of the IndyCar officials. The rain, which made the track extremely slippery and severely limited visibility, first forced the start of the race to be delayed and then caused the entire event to be postponed until tomorrow when IndyCar will hold both the Honda Indy Toronto Race No. 1 and Race No. 2.

In 10 appearances on the streets of Toronto, Bourdais has captured four poles (2004, 2005, 2007 and 2014).He has now qualified in the top-12 in nineof13 races this year (only once on an oval sixth at Iowa), including seven times in the top-10, three top-five efforts and one pole. On the nine street/road circuits contested so far this season, Bourdais has qualified in the top-12 eight times. He has advanced to at least the second round of street/road qualifying six out of seven times (made the Firestone Fast Six twice, Toronto and Long Beach) while qualifying 11th and fifth for the second race of two doubleheaders (Detroit and Houston respectively), where the format is a single round of qualifying with two groups.
