2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey Mopar Mile-High Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 13

Spencer Massey is a firm believer that it doesn't matter where you qualify in the 16-car field of the Top Fuel category in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series field.

The Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team will test that during Sunday's championship eliminations in the MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver when they start from the 13th qualifying position.

"It's just been real tough up here on the mountain," Spencer said. "Sunday is the day where it really matters. We didn't really have a good opportunity to run in the heat during qualifying and that's what we're going to see on Sunday."

The Battery Extender team posted their best run of the weekend, a 3.989-second effort in the mile-high thin air during the third qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.

"Last year when we won the race we didn't even run under 4 seconds throughout qualifying and we won the event with 3.9-second passes all day on Sunday. You just have to take your car up there on Sunday with a tune-up that will go down the racetrack. That's the toughest part. You just have to get down the racetrack here.

"These cars just act so differently up here. These things just love oxygen and that's scarce up here on the mountain. It just feels different as a driver and you have to be prepared for anything on Sunday."

The MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals is the first stop of the annual Western Swing with three races in three weeks. After Denver, the Swing shifts to Sonoma, Calif., and closes with a stop near Seattle.

"Our goal is to go rounds on Sunday and get some momentum going before Sonoma and Seattle on the Western Swing. We'd love to bring home three trophies but we just need to go rounds and get some momentum going."

Spencer and the Don Schumacher Racing team have two Bandimere event titles (2011, 2013) heading into Sunday's eliminations.
