Ron Capps is battling the mile-high altitude of Bandimere Speedway near Denver and the hottest temperatures of the season this weekend in the MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

So are the other Funny Car teams in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series going into Sunday's championship eliminations.

But it's events like the one this weekend when most crew chiefs are frantic about entering eliminations at mile-high altitude on a racetrack carved into the side of a mountain when Ron relishes in having Rahn Tobler as his crew chief.

"This weekend is the most unique of the year," said Ron, who won at Bandimere in 2009 and was runner-up in 1998 driving a Top Fuel dragster and then in 2007.

"We never come close to racing at a mile-high altitude like this and the thin air chokes horsepower. But Tobler has prepared for this for months. I'm always confident when we race on Sundays, but the bigger the challenge for Tobler just makes me more confident.

"And it's races like this when having Tobler as your crew chief is priceless."

Although Ron and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team moved up to third in points after advancing to the championship round two weeks ago at the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Norwalk, Ohio, he starts Sunday one spot back in fourth but only one point behind Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr.

DSR Funny Cars have won three of the past four event titles, including Ron's title June 22 at Epping, N.H.

The MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals is the first stop of the annual Western Swing with three races in three weeks. After Denver, the Swing shifts to Sonoma, Calif., and closes with a stop near Seattle.
