F1600 Super Series: Degrand Wins Race 1 Thriller In Toronto

Exclusive Autosport and their fleet of Spectrum Honda F1600’s continue to wow the crowds and re-write the Canadian Formula 1600 record books. The team brought with them five Spectrum 014 Honda race cars to the Honda Indy Toronto for the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty. Four of the five Exclusive Autosport cars finished inside the top ten with Jayson Clunie crossing the line in 9th, Max Hanratty in 8th, Jack Mitchell Jr. in P2 and Tristan DeGrand captured the win. Jeffrey Kingsley finished in 24th after suffering damage in corner three late in the race.

The 28-car field went green on the Streets of Toronto at 9:15 am Saturday but it didn’t take long for the full course yellow to come out. Unfortunately there were numerous cars who made contact in the first corner of the first lap. All five of the Exclusive Autosport drivers made it through cleanly. However, the full course yellow came out due to a car stopped on track in turn three. DeGrand, who started from the pole position in his #93 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Pro-Am Golf USA / Honda Racing HPD maintained the lead through the full course caution however slipped back into third place after the restart. The reigning series champion Jack Mitchell Jr. in his #1 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD gained a position off the restart as he moved into fourth (after starting the race in P5). Max Hanratty also made up solid ground, moving up six positions from 11th up to 5th in the #90 Juniper Networks / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Honda Racing HPD.

There were plenty of intense battles on track as the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship treated the crowd to some of the best racing they would see all day. On the 12th lap, Jeffrey Kingsley in his #92 Whitby Toyota Scion / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Honda Racing HPD suffered damage and stopped in the runoff at the end of turn three. He would subsequently retire from the race and finish 24th.

Shortly thereafter DeGrand who was sitting in second position made a bold move overtaking
Brandon Newey for the lead. DeGrand’s move happened just in the nick of time as a full course yellow was brought out on lap 14 for two competitors who were turned around in turn three. At the second full course yellow, Mitchell Jr. sat in 4th, Hanratty in 7th, Jayson Clunie in the #90 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD in 10th.

Less than five minutes remained in the thirty minute race when the field went back to green. The first few corners were navigated cleanly, however as DeGrand and Newey were headed down the straightaway into Turn 3 Newey made contact while attempting to pass DeGrand for the lead. Newey would catch air and fall back in the field. Amazingly DeGrand would continue unscathed which speaks volumes to the strength and durability of the Spectrum chassis. With two laps to go in the race, Mitchell Jr. made a brilliant pass on Chase Pelletier to take over second position - where he would finish the race. DeGrand would once again lead the field to the checkered flag and capture the win.

Meanwhile Hanratty was in a heated battle mid pack. He brought his #91 Juniper Networks Spectrum Honda across the line in 8th position. Clunie who was hot on Hanratty’s heals brought his #90 Sparco Spectrum Honda home in 9th position.

Today’s win marks DeGrand’s 7th win in a row in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship and his 5th win in a row in the F1600 Super Series.

Race 2 of the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty takes place tomorrow at 6:15 pm. Follow live timing on racehero.io and on Twitter (@ExclAutosport and @ToyoTiresF1600).

Tristan DeGrand: #93 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Pro Am Golf USA / Honda Racing HPD

“Today's race was awesome! The start was smooth and I was able to keep the lead for the first couple laps. Brandon (Newey) and I had a good clean race going until the end when we made contact. It was a racing incident that, in my opinion, I had no control over but that's racing and it happens to everyone once in a while. I was able to continue without any problem thanks to our strong Spectrum cars. Getting a win here is definitely special and one I won't forget. Tomorrow we are going to push for another win - like always!”

Jack Mitchell Jr.: #1 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc/ Honda Racing HPD

“Race one went really well and I ended up finishing second. I started in fifth and made up a spot right off the start. I challenged for third for the majority of the middle section of the race, however fall back and lost the pack. I didn't have the pace to close the gap, but when the pace car came out I was given the opportunity to go for a podium. I made a pass on Chase Pelletier for second and had to go defensive for the last lap. I have to thank the Exclusive Autosport guys for setting up my #1 Exclusive Autosport Spectrum Honda so well, our car was super quick all race. I start 3rd tomorrow and look forward to going for a win.”

Max Hanratty: #91 Juniper Networks / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD

“The race was overall good for myself in the #91 Juniper Networks Spectrum Honda. We had a great start and went from 11th to sixth. I was able to move up another spot into fifth a few laps later. I was able to hold fifth for awhile and then unfortunately made a few mistakes which pushed me back to 9th position. I was able to bring the car home in eighth place. We struggled to find pace today but I have a great team behind me and we are working to find more pace. I’m looking forward to getting back on track tomorrow evening. I want to thank the entire Exclusive Autosport crew as well as Juniper Networks.”
