A Dream Weekend: GEICO Honda Rider Tomac Scores First 450cc Win

Continuing his streak of podium finishes since his return to the AMA Motocross Series, GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac raced to his first career 450cc overall win in dominant fashion during Saturday's Spring Creek National at Spring Creek Motocross Park.

The young GEICO Honda rider won both 450 motos, jumping out with the holeshot twice in the second race -- once at the start and once after a red flag because of a problem with the starting gate -- and eventually going on to lead every lap.

"Today was my first 450 overall, so it's cool," Tomac said. "Not many guys get to say they've won a 450 outdoor national, so it's cool to be there. And I did it in 1-1 fashion, so that was awesome."

In the first moto, Tomac had an intense side-by-side battle for the win with Ken Roczen after starting off the first lap in third and later passing Ryan Dungey, who had some trouble.

Tomac has gone 1-1 four times in his career -- during his 2013 season in the 250cc division -- a streak that includes an overall win at Spring Creek Motocross Park. Before today, he had never won a 450 moto in his career.

Track conditions and solid starts played to Tomac's favor, allowing him to find a level of comfort.

"I got good starts today," Tomac said. "I just get along with this track because it's a lot like my track at home. There's a lot of sand and big rollers. It's just a track that suits me, so I was comfortable all day."

Earlier in the season, a broken collarbone kept Tomac out of competition and he had recently experienced some back pain, but he felt fit as he rode to his first career 450 victory.

"I was feeling close to 100 percent today; I wasn't having any weakness or anything," Tomac said. "So today was the day where I was just dialed in."

FGEICO Honda 450cc teammate Christian Craig had a bad wreck during the second practice of the day, then fell at the start of the first moto.

"I went out there in the first moto and I ended up falling on the start and starting dead last," Craig said. "I worked my way up and ended up 19th. Not too bad, in my opinion, to go from 40th to 19th."

After finishing 19th in the first moto, Craig fought his way up to ninth in the second, resulting in an overall finish of 12th at his hometown track.

"I was happy with the second moto," Craig said. "I wish the first moto had been a little bit better, but I ended up getting 12th overall and that's a little bit better than the last two weeks, so I've got one more weekend to get inside that top 10 overall, which is what I'm looking forward to."

Tomac will try to continue his winning streak at the next stop on the 2014 Pro Motocross schedule, the Washougal National, July 26, in Washougal, Wash. Craig will rejoin Tomac in Indiana, Aug. 16.
