Incident-Filled Weekend At Oulton Park Leads To Disappointment For Eastwood

Despite a promising start, with strong pace in testing and qualifying, Charlie Eastwood endured a tough weekend at Oulton Park after being knocked off the track in two of the three races.

The fourth round of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship started well for the Northern-Irish Douglas Motorsport racing driver who ended the second test session on Friday in fifth position. The field was closely matched over the course of the weekend, with just eight tenths of a second separating the top ten drivers in the test sessions. Charlie then headed into Friday afternoon’s qualifying, and after another closely-fought 15 minute session, posted the eighth quickest time.

With the on-track action happening over two days, race one took place on Friday afternoon. Eastwood lined up on the fourth row of the grid and made a good start. However just three laps into the race, Charlie was hit from behind at the hairpin which forced him into a spin and dropped him to the back of the field. Eastwood was able to make up two places to finish P18 (and claim three championship points) but came away from the race fiercely disappointed as a P8 finish would have meant a front row start for race two.

For race two on Saturday morning, Eastwood lined up in P18. Heavy rain fell just ahead of the race which led to the decision to start the race behind the safety car. The safety car stayed out for one lap and then the race was able to start properly and Charlie began to make his way through the field. Despite being a notoriously difficult track to overtake on, Charlie was a master of the damp conditions and after 15 minutes of racing had carved his way through the field and crossed the finish line in P12, picking up a further nine Championship points.

For the final race of the weekend, Eastwood lined up in P17. Charlie had one of the drives of the season and after a series of impressive overtakes was up to P7. The young Irish racer was just lining up a move for P6 when he was hit by another car and was pushed into one of the barriers, ending his race.

Charlie Eastwood commented; “It’s been a really disappointing weekend as two racing incidents that were completely out of my hands meant that what could have been a podium finish and a further top six finish were instead a P18 finish and a DNF. However we have to take the positives from the weekend, which include solid pace in testing and qualifying and a strong recovery drive in race three from P17 to P7. We now look ahead to the next race weekend at Silverstone where we will be hoping for a change of luck and the chance to convert our pace into a set of strong results.”

Rounds 13, 14 and 15 of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship take place at Silverstone over the weekend of the 16th and 17th August.
