Frantz-Earley-Todd Cash In With Santa At Flat Rock

Rich Frantz, Billy Earley and Matt Todd captured feature wins at Flat Rock Speedway Saturday night, under the watchful eye of Santa Claus, who was in town for the annual Christmas in July Prize giveaway. Dozens of prizes were awarded to lucky race fans of all ages on what turned out to be another very comfortable and cool evening for the fans. Rain dotted the area for much of the day, but little fell at the track, allowing the race card to go off without delay.

It's been 2 years since Rich Frantz visited the 7-Up Winner's Circle, but Saturday night was all his, as he led all 25 laps enroute to the win in the ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock feature. With an inversion of 10, Frantz started on the inside of the front row and took off on the green flag and was very strong out front as the 22 car field battled for position while Rich built up a sizable lead. The feature went straight through without a yellow flag as Frantz stormed to the win over Kyle Worley, Rob Moore, Landon Schuster, Greg Studt, Guy Fire, Corey Duane, Tim Moore, Clyde McKee and Scott Selmi. Tim Moore posted the Fastime Racing Engines and Parts quick time at 13:613, while Worley, Bob Swanson and Lonnie York took the heat race wins.

Canton, MI driver Matt Todd swept the weekend for the Michigan Legends Cars, who visited Toledo Friday night and Flat Rock Saturday. Fresh off his Toledo win, Todd dove under Rick Kilbourn on lap 20 and held off a furious late race charge from Tony Monge to win the all-green flag 30 lap feature race. Kilbourn led a 4 car freight train from the green, as the veteran kept the lead with Levi Rouster, Monge and Todd in tow. Todd worked his way back and forth, using both grooves and with 10 to go, Matt slid low out of turn 4 and took the lead and then withstood Monge's quick run to the front in the final 3 laps to make it 2 in a row for the weekend. Monge settled for second, Kilbourn third, Rouster fourth and Greg Rudzik fifth, followed by Josh Indig, Brandon Thirlby and Roy Morneau. Todd set fast time at 13:766. Rudzik won the heat and Monge notched the 4 car dash win.

Billy Earley bounced back from a tough week last Saturday and zipped to his 3rd win of 2014 in the 20 lap ARCA Praxair Figure 8 finale' of the night. Before the feature was ready to go, polesitter Robbie Loving's car would not start after making it to the grid, ending his bid for back-to-back feature wins after his Friday night win at Toledo. The field was re-set and Chris Cox, at the wheel for the first time this season, brought the 16 car field to the green. Chris ran very well out front and stayed there for the first 7 laps until the red flag came out when rookie Jacob Lee crashed into Scott Apperson at the intersection. Both drivers were fine but were done for the night. On the re-start, Earley sailed around Cox and took the point and remained there for the final 12 circuits to grab the checkered flag. Dennis Whisman got to second on a wild last-lap scramble, Dan Apperson got to third, Jeremy Miller was fourth and Jeremy Vanderhoof came from the tail to fifth at the finish. Randy Roberts, Ethen Lambert, Race Loving, Stephanie Bradley and Cox completed the top ten finishers. Cox had a great battle with Miller for that second spot for the final 8 laps and got clipped in the last-lap scramble, dropping him back at the finish. Robbie Loving and rookie Ethen Lambert took the heat wins. Ethen's victory was his first-ever checkered flag. Whisman set the Fastime Racing Engines and Parts fast time at 20:882.

Flat Rock Speedway will host its biggest race of the year Saturday, July 26 when the ARCA Discount Tire Gold Cup Late Model Series hits the track for the Moran Chevrolet-Stan Yee Memorial 150. The race has become widely known as one of the top pavement Late Model races in the area. A field of 25-35 Late Models is expected for the race, which pays $2533 to win and $533 to start.

Practice begins at 3, time trials are at 5:30 and racing starts at 7 p.m. Last-chance races, a 25 lap B Main for $500 to win (if there are 32 cars or over) and a full race card for the ARCA Praxair Figure 8's will take place, highlighted the 150 lap main event! An optional Friday night practice session from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is also scheduled.

There is no pre-sale for tickets. The ticket office and front gates will open at 3 p.m. raceday.
