Disappointing Weekend For Sebastian Saavedra In Toronto

Sebastian Saavedra had a disappointing weekend during the Honda Indy Toronto on the streets of downtown Toronto, Canada.

It was a race weekend with a difference today when Race 1, which was scheduled for yesterday, was postponed to today because of inclement weather, creating a unique same-day doubleheader.

Saavedra, who drives the No. 17 Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. - KV AFS Racing car, qualified 19th yesterday on the 1.755-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit for Race 1 but started 16th after repairs to three other cars forced them to the back of the field.

The race started with a rolling start and by turn four a multi-car accident had blocked the track and the race was red-flagged. On the restart, Saavedra was 11th and was running 10th when the first yellow came out. Unfortunately, a problem with his radio prevented Saavedra from hearing the call to pit during the yellow. With a loose car, he was unable to hold on for many more laps and the decision was taken to bring him even though the track had gone back to green flag racing. Saavedra rejoined the race in 20th and got as high 14th when others pitted, but eventually fell to 19th where he remained until the checkered flag was shown. Saavedra picked up 11 points, which put him 20th in the championship standings.

Before there was a chance to relax, the KV AFS Racing team were back in the garage making changes to the car and preparing it for Race 2. The starting grid was determined by entrant points after Race 1 and Saavedra gridded 21st.

A successful standing start quickly turned into a yellow and once it returned to green, Saavedra was able to move up a couple of spots. As rain began to fall, a multi-car accident occurred. Saavedra avoided the melee and slotted into eighth place. When a second yellow was shown, the field pitted for wet tires, but unfortunately a few laps later, when it returned to green, Saavedra found the run off area. When he rejoined the race, he was back to 16th. The 24-year-old started to make his way back through the field before bringing out the yellow flag himself when his car found the tires in turn 3. The safety crew restarted him and he pitted for a new front wing and slick red tires. At that point he developed a mechanical issue and a few laps later his race was over. Saavedra earned nine points and now sits 21st in the standings with 229 points..

Commenting on this weekend, Saavedra said "It wasn't a very positive weekend for us. We were unable to really find the pace in qualifying yesterday and then in Race 2 this afternoon we had some kind of mechanical issue that prevented me from really racing. Unfortunately this situation ended our race later on. We will move forward from this and keep the team's spirits positive. We still have some important races ahead where we can get good results and points towards the championship."

Next up for the KV AFS Racing team will be the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio. The the Honda Indy Toronto will have both races, Saturday July 11th and Sunday July 12th broadcast live on NBCSports at 3:00 p.m. (ET) and IMS IndyCar Radio can be heard on Sirius 213 and XM 209, check local listings for your local station, or listen at IndyCar.com or on the Verizon Indy2014 app.
