Points scoring Weekend for Yelloly in Hockenheim

The weekend saw Nick Yelloly at Hockenheim where GP3 Series supported the German F1 Grand Prix. The Status GP driver put two solid drives in and was rewarded with two top six race results, again showing the consistency of Yelloly who has scored points in every race so far this season.

The 23–year–old took 3rd place in the weekend qualifying and practice. Race one saw Yelloly in 4th just missing the podium. Finishing the weekend in race 2, Yelloly came in 6th. Jimmy Erikson was penalised for failing to adhere to yellow flags and his podium position was taken away and he was dropped down to 15th, putting Yelloly into 5th position for the second race.

Yelloly commented on his 3rd place grid position.

“You always want to be further up on the grid but to be just a tenth off wasn’t too bad. I managed to find a clear gap and put it on the second row. You can always win from there so it’s no issue. My first laps in racing are normally pretty good so I’m confident for the race.”

Temperatures rocketed at Hockenheim and the heat was an issue for all the drivers in the first race but Yelloly was up for the challenge. The top four, Nick Yelloly, Marvin Kirchhofer, Alex Lynn, and Emil Bernstoff maintained their positions off the start, until Bernstorff claimed third from Yelloly later in the opening lap. Yelloly stayed in a lonely 4th place until the checked flag, but took care of his tyres and built upon his championship points tally further.

Variable weather threatened race 2 in the GP3 Series after light rain fell only minutes before the race got underway but a few drops could not make an impression on a very hot track. Nick Yelloly was in 4th but was demoted by Alex Lynn. During the race, Yelloly was harassed by Dean Stoneman who was making his way through the pack, eventually he overtook Yelloly and claimed 4th place, after the penalty was given to Eriksson.

“I had a good start but, as I did in the first race, I got boxed in, so I finished the first lap in fifth. Then I made a mistake in Turn 1 towards the end and clipped a kerb, and Stoneman got past. We had better pace than yesterday and our engine issue was fixed. It just proved you’ve got to qualify at the front and then it’s easy. I’m planning to do that in Hungary – I’m always quick there.”

Nick Yelloly will be racing again next weekend, 25th-27th July, at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary.
