7 Races In 8 Days For '2 Kids In A Camper'; Schrader & Son Steer For ARCA Finale At Lor

With several interesting detours along the way - and some way, way out of the way - 59-year-old Ken Schrader is zeroing in on Lucas Oil Raceway (LOR) for this Friday night's SCOTT Get Geared Up 200 presented by Federated Car Care.

The NASCAR/ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards veteran is coming into town a winner too, fresh off his most recent victory aboard his own Federated Auto Parts dirt modified.

"It started out Friday in Lamar, Colorado; we got tore up, but we fixed it at the track before we left," said Schrader, who took only one modified out on his western swing.

"We won at El Paso County Speedway (Calhan, Colo.) Saturday night, and ran fourth at Colby, Kansas last night."

Okay...time to head toward Indy? Not so fast.

"Tonight we run in Holley Oak, Colorado," which means he'll turn around and head back a few hundred miles west again, before he turns around and heads back east.

Not to worry...Schrader's doing what he loves, and loves what he does. To put it another way, he's as happy as two kids in a camper, which is closer to the truth. Schrader made his western pull with his son Sheldon, traveling around in their compact hauler. Schrader calls 'em all 'campers'.

"It's been a lot of fun; we've had a great time. He's (Sheldon) been selling the shit out of our T-Shirts.

"After the races tonight, we're going to haul off for St. Louis, get in a different camper and then cruise over to Eldora."

OF course Schrader's referring to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Wednesday night at Eldora Speedway where he'll be driving his own Federated Auto Parts truck.

After that, time to take a breath? Not a chance...not for Schrader, who will be climbing in Tony Stewart's USAC Silver Crown Series car Thursday night at LOR. Schrader was the USAC Silver Crown champion in 1982, but said it's been since, ''91 or 2 since I raced a Silver Crown car; I'm sure it was Phoenix.'

"We tested it (Silver Crown car) the other day...don't even remember the number that was on it, but I can tell you the test went well. It was good on the stop-watch too."

Then, after hopefully a good night's sleep, the 17-time ARCA winner will crawl into his No. 52 Federated Auto Parts ARCA car for Friday night's SCOTT Get Geared up 200, live on FOX Sports 1.

If you lost count, that's seven races in eight days.

It all seems like a lot, and, even for the youngest and most energetic, it most certainly is a lot. But for Schrader, it's all the norm. The Fenton, Missouri veteran, who has logged more than 700 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts, will already have more than 50 races in the books this year prior to landing at LOR. There were also at least 12 other races that were rained out. He's won seven times so far this year, all in dirt modifieds...and all over the country.

"We've got seven (wins) right now...Terre Haute, the Summer Nationals in Macon, Columbus Mississippi, Flora Illinois, Hohenwald Tennessee, Escanaba Michigan and Colorado; I think that's seven."

Oh by the way, Schrader is also running the entire 2014 ARCA Racing Series schedule with himself in for at least 10, rookie Matt Tifft in for eight and Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell in for two.

Schrader has two Federated Chevrolets entered at LOR, one for himself and the other for 18-year-old Tifft. Tifft tied his career-best ARCA finish of third last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

"For his first mile-and-a-half, I was thrilled with the job he did...solid in practice, qualified sixth and raced third...that's a good night."

Following Friday night's ARCA race, Schrader and his son will climb back in the 'camper' and head for home (Concord, N.C.) Saturday morning. Shockingly, he's got no races on his calendar Friday or Saturday.

"We're going to head for Charlotte and see what my house and shop look like."
