Kent Calls As Grant's Motorsport Mission Gains Momentum

George Grant is aiming to capitalise on recent performance gains when he resumes his quest to raise Mission Motorsport’s profile in round four of the MaX5 Racing Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend (July 26-27).

The GGR Motorsport driver travels to the former grand prix circuit after taking a major step forward at Cadwell Park last time out, despite concluding that Louth’s tight and twisty circuit masked the improvements he and the official Armed Forces charity had made.

Nonetheless, Grant’s Mk3 MX-5 has been further optimised after a raft of changes were implemented following a recent test at Silverstone.

And despite its bumpy surface and dramatic elevation changes, these additions have given Grant further impetus to push forward on Brands Hatch’s Indy configuration.

“After modifying the car more to my liking at Cadwell, we’ve managed to make further enhancements,” admitted Grant. “We’ve changed the suspension, shock absorbers and rear and front sub-frames. This should stand us in good stead for Brands, especially with the compression experienced on the run up to Druids Bend!

“We’ve also tweaked the engine and brakes for better performance and efficiency – not to mention some dramatic weight shedding – so hopefully we’ll see the benefits during testing on Thursday and Friday. Despite never racing at Brands Hatch, I’m really looking forward to getting behind the wheel. The Indy layout is very short and full-on, but still good fun.”

Mission Motorsport’s entire crew, led by Major James Cameron, will once again support Grant in his efforts to build on eighth in the Mk3 standings, as well as Lance Corporal David Birrell, who races with prosthetic legs.

And with former Mazda MX-5 and Lotus Cup GB champion Rob Boston providing Grant with one-to-one tuition, the GGR Motorsport driver is buoyant about his prospects.

“I’m mentally and physically prepared for Brands Hatch, but know there’s always more to extract from both car and driver,” said Grant. “Rob’s record speaks for itself, so I’ll ensure I absorb everything he has to offer. Major James and Tony Compson have been fantastic in helping me thus far, but I felt it was best to call upon Rob, due to their intense schedule. That’s not a bad thing of course!”

While concentrating on moving up the grid, November’s eight-hour Race of Remembrance at Anglesey – a combination of annual commemoration and motorsport – is very much a priority for Grant, who is entering with former BTCC drivers Shaun Hollamby, David Brodie and current MaX5 Racing points leader Jonathan Cryer.

“The Race of Remembrance is going extremely well,” beamed Grant. “We have roughly half the teams already committed so far, and with BTCC race-winner Rob Austin entering, we’re looking to raise further awareness of what should be a fantastic event.”

However, Grant’s immediate objective is to build upon recent promise and fully exploit the improvements made to his Mission Motorsport-run MX-5 as he searches for a season-best result this weekend.

MaX5 Racing Championship schedule: Brands Hatch

Qualifying: 14:00 – 14:20

Sunday 27 July
Race 1: 10:00 – 10:20
Race 2: 15:35 – 15:55
