Hilmer Motorsport With A Top Result At The GP2 Race Weekend In Hockenheim

At last weekend’s home race in Hockenheim the GP2 team of Hilmer Motorsport was able to score points again. In a turbulent race with many safety car periods on Sunday, the Briton Jon Lancaster finished in fifth position and scored six points for the team. Lancaster, who had to retire from the race on Saturday after a collision and who consequently had to start from the back of the grid on Sunday, showed a great pursuit race after the rain started just before the start and when the track was extremely wet and slippery. Lancaster decided to go on wet tyres and was able to make up many positions. The circuit dried up and a change on dry tyres was necessary. After the pit stop and a hard fight with the Championship leader Jolyon Palmer who was behind Lancaster, the Hilmer Motorsport driver finished the race in fifth position. His team mate Daniel Abt, who was 20th on Saturday and who also had to start from the back of the grid chose a risky strategy and started on dry tyres. Unfortunately, Abt couldn’t use his tyres especially on the drying track and only finished in 15th position.

The crew of Hilmer Motorsport will move straight on to Budapest where the seventh round of the GP2 Series will take place this weekend. Practice will start on Friday (25th July) at 12:00 and the battle for Pole Position will take place during Qualifying at 15:55. On Saturday (26th July) the race will start at 15:40 and on Sunday (27th July) at 10:35.

Franz Hilmer, Team Principal:
“We are very happy about Jon’s fifth position in Hockenheim. He kept a cool head on Sunday and drove a good and intelligent race. Unfortunately, he had to stop his car in the pit lane on Saturday after a collision with a competitor, who pushed Jon from track. The damage on his car was too big and so he had to start from the back of the grid on Sunday. Maybe he could have done a better result but nevertheless we are very happy about six further points in our account. Daniel wasn’t lucky in front of his home crowd and only finished the races in 20th and 15th position respectively. Now we will have the next race in Budapest and we are very confident that we will be able to score more points.”

Daniel Abt, Driver #11:
“My home race in Hockenheim was completely different from what I expected. In the race on Saturday, the degradation of my tyres was too massive so that I dropped back from ninth to 20th position. On Sunday after the rain before the race I couldn’t do more and ended up in 15th place. I hope that it will be better in Budapest.”

Jon Lancaster, Driver #12:
“I am very happy about the fifth place in Hockenheim! It was a chaotic race on Sunday after the rain, but I really enjoyed it a lot. We had to start from the back which was a shame after I couldn’t finish the race on Saturday after a collision. If this wouldn’t have happened we could have done even a better result. However, I am very satisfied and I hope to be able to repeat this result soon.”
