The Magic Of Indy Helps Fisichella To First United Sportscar Pole

At the most storied race track in the USA, and in a car bearing the most iconic sportscar name in the world, Ferrari’s Giancarlo Fisichella today took his first GTLM pole position of the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship.

The Roman driver completed just three flying laps on his way to a class pole-position lap of 1:22.378 in the No.62 Ferrari 458 Italia, his fastest time set on his third and final hot lap in the 15-minute qualifying session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is the Houston-based team’s first pole position since the final ever round of the American Le Mans Series, Petit Le Mans, in October last year.

Fisichella was confident coming into this latest round of the championship thanks to happy memories of successful Formula One races in Indianapolis, and more especially because of the latest Balance of Performance changes. He, and team mate Pierre Kaffer, both hoped the latest changes would allow them to compete on a more level playing field than in previous rounds, and the two practice sessions seemed to demonstrate that this was the case.

An elated Giancarlo Fisichella said after the session: "It’s a great day! I’m so happy for everyone at Risi Competizione, the mechanics, the team, Giuseppe Risi and for all our partners. It was very important for us to get the new Balance of Performance for here, and everyone’s done a great job. The car is much better and I was so comfortable and confident in the car that I think I drove well. Pierre is really strong and on the pace too so I think we can do well for the race tomorrow. That, of course, will be the real test and it might not be quite so easy but we have got a good start for the weekend."

The next round of the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship will be the Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IN, tomorrow on 25 July. The 2h45 minute race will begin at 5:45 pm EDT and will be broadcast LIVE FROM 5:30 pm on FOXSports1.
