Burton Racing Looking For Encore Win At Home In The Brickyard Sports Car Challenge

Looking to return to victory lane at a track that holds a lot of history and meaning for the Indianapolis-based team, Burton Racing is all set for the Brickyard Sports Car Challenge on Friday.

After a quick 15-minute qualifying session, Mike LaMarra put the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda BMW 128i he shares with Terry Borcheller in 15th position while Greg Strelzoff piloted the No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i he shares with Connor Bloum to a starting position of 21st.

Burton Racing couldn’t have asked for better weather during the mid-afternoon qualifying session for their home race. LaMarra and Strelzoff took to the track, warm from a busy morning of practice, and quickly made their way up to speed.

“The car feels great,” said an enthusiastic Strelzoff after qualifications. “We had a little bit of an issue at the beginning of qualifying that kind of put me off my game, and I had to go through some marbles after being blocked which took me about half a lap to get rid of. But then I got going and I was catching the cars in front of me too quickly. On what ended up being my fastest lap I caught a Porsche Boxster like it was standing still, I couldn’t believe it. So I know there is a lot more in the car. And I know I have said this a lot this season, but I feel really strongly about the race and moving forward. I really think that with this track, as the race wears on it is really going to come to the BMW machines.”

“I got a really good lap on the tires at the beginning,” added LaMarra. “I had a nice gap at the beginning of qualifying and I was able to put in good laps. I was able to improve my time from the earlier session both because the team put in some hard work on the car and because I am just getting faster around this track. On this track you can very easily overdrive it; you feel like you are going faster going into a corner but you aren’t and it’s just a very delicate line. It’s a long race tomorrow and as long as we can continue to roll off consistent laps, which I definitely think we can do, we have a really good car, then we will be great for the race.”

As their home race, Burton Racing is excited to welcome many of their key sponsors to the event, including Dreyer & Reinbold BMW, BMW Exelda and Gold Eagle. The team looks to represent their sponsors well by building off of their qualifying result and making a repeat trip of last year’s result to kiss the bricks this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“I’m pleased with our qualifying results,” said Team Manager Keith Burton. “As always, all of the guys have worked extremely hard to get ready for this race and we are especially excited to be back here at home. We have great memories here form last year when Mike and Terry won and of course it would be great to be able to repeat that. But we are just focused on driving a good, clean race tomorrow and adding another solid finish to the books.”

The 2.5-hour race is set to go green Friday at 2:35 PM (ET). The race will be streamed LIVE on IMSA.com and will air on FOX Sports 1 on August 3rd at 12:00 PM (ET). As always, follow @Burton_Racing on Twitter for live updates throughout the weekend.
