Jones Recovers From Injury To Clinch Double Victory At Spa

Carlin’s British Formula Three team have enjoyed a solid day of racing at the infamous Spa-Francorchamps circuit with Ed Jones taking pole position and a double victory. Jones along with Sean Gelael and Sam Macleod have joined Championship regular Peter Li Zhi Cong for the event and Saturday didn’t disappoint for action. Over the course of the day Jones, who has been recovering from injury, took pole position in the morning and clinched a lights to flag victory during race one; he then fought well to snatch the lead on the final lap of race two with Gelael also taking two podiums as part of the invitation class. Running in the regular international class Macleod had an unlucky start to his first race however made up positions to clinch seventh in race two while Cong also fought well however sadly retired in race two.

In the morning qualifying session of the Cooper Tires British Formula Three Championship all four Carlin men were quick to make an impression on the field. Jones, who had missed a couple of months of racing, was one of the early movers and by the end of the session had put his car on pole position. Gelael joined his team mate and qualified in second overall. Macleod and Li Zhi Cong also enjoyed strong a strong session setting the fifth and eighth fastest time respectively.

The lights for the first race of the day extinguished a few hours later and Jones launched off the line and into the first corner holding on to the lead. Unfortunately Macleod was caught up on the opening lap and was unable to complete the rest of the race – this result would place him at the back of the field for the second race of the weekend.

As a result, the safety car was released and by the end of the first lap Gelael had dropped to fourth and Cong was ninth. When the safety car came back in Gelael began to make progress through the field having lost two places in the opening lap. His progress would soon see him up behind his team mate in second position. Jones and Gelael would eventually hold on to their positions and finish first and second as part of the invitation class. Running in the international class Li Zhi Cong clinched seventh position following a solid race for the Carlin man.

With the top five finishers seeing their positions reversed for the second race of the weekend Jones and Gelael were in the midfield while Macleod found himself at the back of the grid. However Macleod made the most of his start and was soon running in 6th position as the race began to get into its rhythm. Li Zhi Cong was also running well in the opening laps however the Chinese racer found himself caught up in drama and retired on the fourth lap of the race.

Jones and Gelael meanwhile had launched impressively off the line and Jones was running second overall with Gelael in third. The positions for the two Carlin men would remain unchanged until the final lap when Jones made a last ditch move on Roberto Mehri to clinch position and take the lead of the race – his second victory of the day.

Macleod came home seventh on the road however that position changes to fifth overall with the exclusion of Jones and Gelael in the invitation class.

Jones said of his day, ‘It was a really good day for me and I'm pleased to come back from injury with two wins. The car was strong and I was pleased to back in the cockpit. The second race was a little tougher that the first because I had to make positions in the opening lap and then deal with turn one being wet. The rest of the track was dry but the weather was changing which is typical Spa. But I made the most of it and took both wins so I'm happy with the result.
