The thermometer, however, went the other direction with an afternoon high of 97 degrees before dropping to the mid-80s for Friday evening's second session.

Elapsed times also dropped for the night session with Don Schumacher Racing's Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team holding the No. 3 spot in Top Fuel heading to Saturday's last two qualifying sessions in the Sonoma NHRA Nationals at Sonoma Raceway before championship eliminations the following day in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

The best run by the U.S. Army team, which won the pole at week ago near Denver with crew chief Mike Green and assistant Neal Strausbaugh, was at night with a run of 3.793 (323.43). Ranked fourth is Antron Brown and the Matco Tools team and Spencer Massey's Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster lost traction on their second lap of the day and sit outside the top-12 qualifying positions.

In Funny Car, DSR's Jack Beckman and the Valvoline SynPower Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car led by crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant Chris Cunningham hold the No. 4 position with a time of 4.075 (307.30). In fifth, is Matt Hagan and the 426 Race HEMI 50th Anniversary Tribute Mopar Dodge Charger R/T. California's Ron Capps is seventh in the order while Tommy Johnson Jr. sits 12th after slowing in the second session.

The Sonoma Nationals is the second stop of the annual Western Swing with three races in three weeks. The Swing closes next weekend with a stop near Seattle.
