Carlin 1-2 In Spa As Jones Takes Third Victory

Carlin’s Ed Jones has secured his third victory of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps where he is taking part this weekend in the Cooper Tires British Formula Three Championship. The UAE based driver took pole position on Saturday morning and won both races of the day and has now continued his success to win again this morning. Close behind him, and in the lead at points during the race, was team mate Sean Gelael who joins him as part of the invitation class – he secured another podium this weekend. Sam Macleod, who has joined the team for the weekend, enjoyed a race of gaining positions through the field – his hard work placed him sixth overall while Championship regular Peter Li Zhi Cong had a third solid race to come home in ninth overall.

It was a foggy start to racing action this morning as the field lined up on the grid for the third and final race of the weekend. Off the line Gelael rushed into the lead snatching it from team mate Jones. The Indonesian driver fought well to lead the first few laps around the infamous circuit. Meanwhile Li Zhi Cong had run wide at the start and fallen to 12th – the Chinese racer was quick however to begin regaining the positions on track. Macleod was running in 8th overall and looking racy behind the trail of cars ahead.

Soon enough a battle for the lead developed with Jones piling the pressure on Gelael. The pair fought hard and well together and, after battling through multiple corners with the race lead changing hands a number of times, it was Jones who came out on top. Snatching the lead he began to pull away; the Carlin invitation class duo at the front would find little competition from anyone else on track and came home to secure a strong one-two.

Macleod meanwhile was beginning to gain positions through the field – the British racer was involved in multiple fights for position and had moved past both Dontje and Nabil on his way to claiming sixth position as his own. Also enjoying a good recovery following his first lap incident was Li Zhi Cong who, as the chequered flag fell, had clinched ninth position as his own; ensuring that all four Carlin cars finished the race in the top 10.

Jones said of his race, ‘It was a perfect weekend for me with three wins but nevertheless I had to work hard in all of them. In the this race Sean [Gelael] was able to get by in the slipstream after Eau Rough however a few laps later I was able to get the position back. I’m so pleased with the result and the team have been great in helping me through the injury and in getting back in the car for this weekend. I’m looking forward to being out again next weekend in Austria.’

Gelael added, ‘It was a really positive weekend for us, we tried a different approach to the weekend and it worked a lot here. Our pace was very competitive throughout and in the last race I was leading but I wasn’t able to take the win but overall I’m very pleased with how everything went here. It really gives me a lot of confidence as we head in to the next round at the Red Bull Ring.’
