Stanaway Claims Pole For Hungarian GP Support

Status Grand Prix’s Richie Stanaway claimed pole position for the GP3 Series at the Hungaroring, with team-mate Nick Yelloly third on the grid.

New Zealander Stanaway jumped to the top of the times on his second set of new Pirelli P Zero tyres, just before a red flag interrupted the session with three minutes remaining.

When qualifying restarted there was time for just one flying lap, but times on the front row remained unchanged. This allowed Stanaway, who is fifth in the championship, to take his maiden GP3 pole by just three hundredths of a second.

Yelloly and Stanaway ran one-two early in the session to carry over their strong form on used tyres from free practice. Englishman Yelloly, who lies sixth in the points, leapt from seventh fastest to third after the restart, despite having only one flying lap. His final effort was just over a tenth of a second from Stanaway’s time, indicating how incredibly close the competition is in GP3.

Alfonso Celis Jr was looking good in 15th place on his first set of tyres, but the 17-year-old Mexican GP3 rookie was unfortunate to spin off at Turn 5 with a few minutes of the session remaining, which prevented him from maximising his final set of tyres. He will start from 22nd on the grid.

The first race of the Hungarian GP support weekend takes place on Saturday at 1720, with Sunday’s race two at 0925.

Driver quotes:

Richie Stanaway
“I’m really happy to get my first GP3 pole position, and also for the team who did a great job with the car. It’s good to bounce back from a difficult Hockenheim weekend, and I’m looking forward to the race this afternoon. Qualifying is so vital for the race. Hopefully now I can get a good start and manage the race from there.”

Nick Yelloly
“We’ve been performing well all season, it just hasn’t always gone our way in qualifying. Being in the top three like last weekend in Germany is good – we’ve proved the car is good enough for pole. From here it’s just about getting a good start and looking after the tyres in the heat of the race.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“It was a tough qualifying. It was going OK on my first set of new tyres, and I got into the top 15. But I was pushing hard, maybe forcing it too much in the end, and I spun off. It gives me a touch race but there’s still lots to fight for.”
