2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Sonoma Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 13

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is competing at Sonoma Raceway this weekend on the second leg of NHRA's notorious "Western Swing" that started in Denver last week and ends next weekend near Seattle.

For the second consecutive race Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster team will start Sunday's championship eliminations from the 13th qualifying spot.

And this time Spencer is hoping to have more success this weekend when he faces Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown.

"We qualified 13th last weekend and if you look at our stats from this year, we usually do OK when we start at the bottom half of the field. But that wasn't the case last weekend so we're looking to get back to normal tomorrow."

The Battery Extender team has 17 round wins this season and 12 of them have come after qualifying in the bottom-half of the 16-car field.

"That's pretty interesting," he said. "I guess that just goes to show that it doesn't matter where you qualify, as long as you do."
Spencer is 1-3 against Brown this season.

"It's no doubt they have a good car over there," Spencer said of Brown, who has five event titles this season and ranks second in the standings. "But anything can happen on race day and we'll be ready for them."

Last year at Sonoma, Spencer defeated his other DSR teammate Tony Schumacher in the opening round of eliminations and went on to the semifinals round.
