Status GP's Stanaway Claims More Points In Hungary

Status Grand Prix’s Richie Stanaway took sixth position in the reversed-grid GP3 Series race of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend to add to his Saturday race win.

The New Zealander ended the Hungaroring round as the weekend’s highest points scorer, consolidating his newly won second place in the standings.

After their one-two finish on Saturday, Stanaway and team-mate Nick Yelloly started the reversed-grid race together on the fourth row. While Stanaway maintained eighth place in the opening corners, Yelloly ran wide at Turn 2, dropping out of the points and into 11th.

Stanaway then pulled off a spectacular move halfway around the lap to take seventh from Emil Bernstorff, and added an incisive manoeuvre on Dean Stoneman to snatch sixth place at Turn 1 on lap three.

While Stanaway focused on preserving his tyres on his way to sixth place, Yelloly caught up the battle for eighth in the closing laps, but could not make a move on a circuit that is notoriously hard to pass on.

Stanaway therefore became the first Saturday race winner of 2014 to take points from the following day’s race. Yelloly, meanwhile, ended his strong weekend sixth in the points, having closed to only 11 points off third in the table. Status GP remains second in the teams’ championship.

Alfonso Celis Jr started from 16th on the grid, but the Mexican rookie stalled and dropped to the back of the field. The 17-year-old pulled off some excellent passing moves over the first two laps to regain four positions as he recovered to a finish in 22nd place, after a mid-race battle with Ryan Cullen and Nelson Mason.

The sixth round of the GP3 Series takes place in support of the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps on August 22-24.

Driver quotes:

Richie Stanaway
“I had a pretty good opening lap and got past Bernstorff. Then I got a run on Stoneman and got past him as well – that was a pretty good overtaking move. Then all I had to do was manage the tyres and consolidate sixth place, especially as most people who have good Saturdays in GP3 have bad Sundays! We’re back in the championship hunt now, so we need every single point we can get.”

Nick Yelloly
“Maybe I was a bit too ambitious on the first lap and got it wrong a bit. Also, we tried something on the car and it wasn’t quite right – but that was worth doing from a fourth-row start with not much to lose. It’s not the end of the world – we got some good points yesterday and I’m close to third in the standings. We improved our position over the weekend and now we can work hard in the break to put it on pole at Spa.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“That was a tough race. I stalled at the beginning and went to the back, and it’s so difficult to overtake at all here. I just gained a couple of places on the opening laps and that was pretty much it. The race was already over for me when I stalled, so we'll move forward and learn from the weekend.”
