NAGL SALVAGES EIGHTH IN CZECH REPUBLIC

Honda World Motocross’ Max Nagl made the best he could of some difficult circumstances to take eighth position overall at a humid and cloudy Loket circuit for the Grand Prix of The Czech Republic. The fourteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship was played out on the stony, flat and fast terrain draped over the Loket hillside setting and was attended by a vibrant 21,500 attendance. The German glided his works CRF450RW to fourth and seventeenth positions in the two thirty minute and two lap motos for what is the penultimate European-based meeting in the 2014 world championship campaign.

The Grand Prix itself was claimed by Jeremy Van Horebeek (Yamaha) with the Belgian celebrating his first triumph in the premier class in just his second season. Kevin Strijbos (Suzuki) took his seventh podium of the year in second place while Tony Cairoli (KTM) also scaled the rostrum in third and keeps control of the red plate as MXGP standings leader.

Nagl rode to a superb second pole position of the season on Saturday. The former world championship runner-up admitted that some recent testing and set-up work on his ’12’ machine had been beneficial and he led from the first corner until the last in the qualifying race. Max, however, could not replicate the lively start in the first moto on Sunday and endured a lonely ride to his finishing position of fourth. He was able to relegate Clement Desalle (Suzuki) and also deal with the threat of Shaun Simpson (KTM) and Gautier Paulin (Kawasaki).

In the second race – that took place under darker skies with the threat of rain looming – Nagl was again frustrated out of the gate and was hit by Steven Frossard (Kawasaki) negotiating a fast straightaway. The collision knocked him back to last place. Max churned out the second half of the moto making time and passes where possible to grab four points for seventeenth. Nagl now holds seventh place in the MXGP championship ‘picture’ and lies thirty-four points behind Shaun Simpson in sixth.

Team-mate Evgeny Bobryshev is making progress on his road to recovery from his double leg break, courtesy of an accident at the Italian GP on June 16, and is planning to be back in the paddock at the Grand Prix of Belgium, at Lommel next week.

Gariboldi Honda’s Tim Gajser was competing at round fourteen in the knowledge that the coming races represent a fine chance of capturing his first career overall victory with reigning champion Jeffrey Herlings (KTM) on the injury list due to a broken femur. At Loket however the Slovenian was denied, and dealt with some adversity to rank sixth overall in the MX2 category with the CRF250RW.

Gasjer fought hard to minimize the handicap of a poor start in the first race by battling with Jose Butron (KTM) mid-race and then catching and almost passing Valentin Guillod (KTM) in the final laps for third place. He eventually settled for fourth. While trailing Russian Alex Tonkov (Husqvarna) in the second outing Tim’s left kneecap was struck by a rock and the teenager, in some pain, lost several slots in the top ten while taking a few moments to regain his breath! The seventeen year old ploughed onwards riding with pain and discomfort to collect ninth place at the flag! He was barely able to move the knee joint in the team awning afterwards.

Tim stands on the edge of the top four in the MX2 points table and just needs to better Dylan Ferrandis (Kawasaki) to move up from his current ranking of fifth.

The overall MX2 podium saw Frenchman Jordi Tixier (KTM) claim the top spot with Valentin Guillod (KTM) and Christophe Charlier (Yamaha) claiming second and third spots respectively.

The fifteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will take place in the deep sand of Lommel for the Grand Prix of Belgium next weekend, August 2-3, and the last race in Europe before the series heads to Brazil and Mexico to finish the 2014 campaign.

HONDA COMMENTS:

Max Nagl:
Race Result: 4th/17th Championship position: 7th
“Yesterday I had a really good start and normally at this track if you begin at the front then you stay there but today I had too much wheel-spin both times. I don't know why because I did not change anything about my technique or on the bike. The ground was also the same. I have no idea. If you are far back then it is difficult to fight. In the first heat my riding was OK and to come back to fourth. I was quite aggressive in the beginning and making some good passes. In the second heat my start was worse, I was mid-pack and it was chaos. Frossard took me off the track on a straight. I don't know if he had a kicker or something but he cut straight across and took my front wheel out and I was on the ground. The handlebar was a bit bent and I was OK so I continued riding but the result was disappointing.”

Tim Gajser:
Race Result: 4th/9th Championship position: 5th
“I took too long to make passes in the first moto but I found it very hard to overtake today. Getting up to fourth place was not too bad and I should have passed Guillod but I made some mistakes and lost time. In the second moto my start was really good, better than the first. After two or three laps Tonkov’s bike flicked up a stone and it smashed against my left knee. It was so painful I thought about pulling off the track there and then but after half a lap it started to ease away so I carried on to see what I could do.”
