Laurens Vanthoor takes lead of the standings

Thanks to victory in the 24-hour race at Spa Audi driver Laurens Vanthoor is the new front runner in the Blancpain Endurance Series (BES). In the standings of the world’s most important GT3 racing series, the Belgian from Belgian Audi Club Team WRT with a score of now 74 points is seven points ahead of his Audi brand colleagues Edward Sandström/Stéphane Ortelli/Grégory Guilvert from Saintéloc Racing, who finished in fourth place at Spa. In the teams classification, the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT took the lead of the standings following the success in its home round as well.

Class wins and podium finish for Audi teams

Jan Brunstedt made a guest appearance in the fourth round of the Belgian BRCC championship in his Audi R8 LMS. The Swede from team JB Motorsport contested his first race this season. After an incorrect interpretation of pit stop rules, he took a GTP class win but finished only sixth overall in round one. On Saturday, the team owner and driver again won the GTP class and finished on the overall podium. In their rebuilt Audi R8 LMS ultra, Frank Beliën, Bert Longin and Anthony Kumpen clinched third position in the GTPE class on Saturday and finished fifth overall.

Class victory for Charlie Geipel

In round five of the DMV Touring Car Challenge (DMV TCC) at Hockenheim, Charlie Geipel clinched a victory in class 8 for GT3 vehicles. The driver from Audi customer team Yaco-Racing in his R8 LMS ultra was the best-placed driver of a GT3 car in the first of the two races and finished as the overall runner-up.

Two wins for Rod Salmon in Australia

Rod Salmon had a successful weekend in Australia. The Audi customer won two rounds of the NSW Production Sports Championship in his R8 LMS in Sydney. In the third heat, which was a one-hour race, he clinched second position. His Audi is being run by Melbourne Performance Centre. Thanks to those results, Salmon leads the New South Wales based series with two races to go. At the same time, Salmon used the weekend to prepare for a circuit which is up next in the Australian GT Championship calendar. The Audi driver will head to Sydney on 22 August as the leader of the GT Trophy class.

André Couto and Alex Yoong win at Fuji

In round two of the Audi R8 LMS Cup at Fuji Speedway, pole sitter André Couto celebrated a start-finish victory in the first race ahead of Marchy Lee and title defender Adderly Fong. In the Audi R8 LMS Cup’s first event in Japan, Couto also secured pole for the second race in which Alex Yoong advanced to the front of the field right on lap one and would not relinquish the lead again through to the finish. Rahel Frey and Kyong-Ouk You trailed Yoong, who had retired in the first heat, in positions two and three. Both benefited from a collision of Couto and Lee, who had to park their cars after contact on lap 8. Yoong is leading the overall standings with 65 points. The Malaysian has a five-point advantage over Frey after four of twelve races.

TUSC: Haase/Miller second at Indianapolis

Christopher Haase and Bryce Miller in the Audi R8 LMS took second place in the GT Daytona class in round nine of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship (TUSC) season at Indianapolis. For the German-American duo from the Audi customer team Paul Miller Racing that was leading the class on the Former Formula One track configuration of the tradition-steeped circuit some of the time, this marked the third podium finish of the year following Laguna Seca and Detroit.

Timo Scheider wins in ‘Rad am Ring’ bike race

Audi factory driver Timo Scheider together with Team Ledschends-Wings for Life 3 has won the 24-hour bicycle race on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Following a strong performance, the team of eight had a two-lap advantage on finishing the ‘Rad am Ring’ event. The Audi factory team Phoenix Racing had fielded two teams in the race. The Phoenix Racing 1 squad, which included DTM Champion Mike Rockenfeller, finished the one-day event in seventh place. Phoenix Racing 2, for which Scheider pedaled as well, took position 14.

The extreme athlete was trained by Audi race experience to become a race driver and finished the Nürburgring 24 Hours in June in ninth position. At Spa, the Austrian waved the start flag for the 24 Hour race and crossed fingers for his brand colleagues in the race.

Mattias Ekström attends Colorance Day in Ingolstadt

Audi driver Mattias Ekström appeared on stage in front of 1,200 students in Ingolstadt on Tuesday. Colorance Day – a portmanteau of color and tolerance – is substantially co-hosted by the Upper Bavarian region. It is an event that aims to convey new impulses and passion to students through music, sports and fun, inspiring them to achieve personal aims more effectively. Two ice hockey players from ERC Ingolstadt, several bands, the Chinese acrobatics icon Kai Hou and the two-time DTM Champion Ekström thrilled the young audience with their appearances. In various games of skill the youngsters were pitted directly against the guests. Audi is one of the sponsors of Colorance Day that has been held for the fourth time.

A word from ... Romolo Liebchen

Sincere congratulations on winning the Spa 24 Hours. What makes this most recent success a special one?
Today, on clinching our third victory at Spa, we made a dream come true. We can’t expect more than that. And in such a competitive environment, victory is an exceptional feat. Together with the success of Audi Sport in the Le Mans 24 Hours, AUDI AG made motorsport history this year – with exclusive top-end technology at Le Mans and with production-based technology in GT3 racing that is available for purchasing.

What factors have led to this success?
We again saw that the Audi R8 LMS ultra was the most reliable car. All customers finished without any problems. There was only one retirement – and that was due to an accident. Reliability is becoming an increasingly important criterion for our buyers to opt for the four rings. We also take service very seriously and are set on providing optimum support to our customers. The customers greatly appreciate this.

In terms of the sport, what wishes remain after this string of success?
We can definitely think of a few more goals. We aim to sustain our status as a successful brand in the future because the competition is fierce. Furthermore, the finale of the Blancpain Endurance Series, which we are now leading, is coming up in August. In addition, there are a number of Audi drivers continuing to battle for further titles around the world. And, last but not least, there’s a special event in November. In Macau, we’ve celebrated three victories to date. Naturally, we’d like to decide the Macau GT Cup in our favor again this year.

Coming up next week

02/08 Nürburgring (D), round 6, Endurance Championship
03/08 Spielberg (A), round 6, DTM
03/08 Mid-Ohio (USA), round 7, Pirelli World Challenge
