2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Sonoma Nationals Event Recap: Second Round

Spencer Massey knows that patience is necessary in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series competition, and it's ironic patience is a key in the fastest form of motorsports but it is.

Spencer's patience has been tested over the last month of NHRA competition when the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team did not win a round of racing on Sunday for three consecutive events.

But all of that changed on Sunday when Spencer earned the opening round win against his higher qualified Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown and the Matco Tools team.

Crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara tuned Spencer to his best lap of the weekend, a 3.796-second pass at 322 mph that defeated a tire smoking effort by the Matco team.

"You don't want to race your teammate in the first round," Spencer said. "We knew that they were going to make a good lap and we had to give it all we had. The track just didn't hold their run and we made our best lap of the weekend to turn on the win light.

"I almost forgot what that light looked like. I don't think I've ever lost first round three races in a row and I didn't enjoy it and definitely didn't what to do that again."

The Battery Extender team faced Richie Crampton in the second round and came up short in a tire-smoking battle after both dragsters lost traction.

"The track just got too hot out there," he said. "We'll take our round win and head to Seattle and try to close out the Western Swing with some more wins."

Spencer's win-loss mark is 18-13 for the Battery Extender team that has won 13 rounds from the bottom-half of the Top Fuel qualifying field.

Only three races remain before the Countdown to the Championship field is set. Spencer remains sixth in NHRA Mello Yello standings following Sonoma.
