Cadillac Racing Headed To Mid-Ohio

Cadillac Racing is headed to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for rounds 11 and 12 of the Pirelli World Challenge Series presented by StopTech Mid-Ohio Grand Prix to run Aug. 1-3.

After a tough run at Toronto two weeks ago Johnny O'Connell (Flowery Branch, Ga.) still leads the GT standings with 1,038 points. Teammate Andy Pilgrim (Boca Raton, Fla.) is in third with 882 points. The team has been hit with three performance adjustments that have reduced horsepower and added 130 lbs. to the CTS.V.Rs. The duo have had success at the 2.2-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio natural terrain road course. The undulating circuit known for its landmark Carousel and Key Hole turns will be a challenge for Cadillac Racing to maintain their standings in the points.

"I see Mid-Ohio as a hilly version of Toronto with a lot of mid-speed corners and transitions," Pilgrim said. "These types of tracks are a little tough for the Cadillac CTS.V.R as we are a long wheelbase car and we are heavier than all the GT3 cars. We were the tenth and eleventh fastest lap times in race two at Toronto and sadly, I think it will be very tough to do better than that at Mid-Ohio.

"We have lost a lot of horse power and had weight added to us, so this will make it very difficult for us to run up front, but we will give it 110% that's for sure," he continued. "I don't like having the deck stacked against us, but it sure is motivating. There is no give up in Cadillac Racing.

"I have had some good races and wins at Mid-Ohio," Pilgrim related. "I remember one win back in the late 80's in a three-hour race where we ended up running in very wet conditions and my teammate Randy Pobst won it for us on the last lap. I was running in another series and had stepped in to do the race and had a different team race suit on with completely wrong patches. We had the hardest time trying to stick patches to the suit after we realized we won and in the end I did the podium with my suit wrapped around my waist, to keep from getting in trouble."

O'Connell knows he will have his hands full this weekend.

"I feel we will be maybe in the bottom of the top ten if we hit the sweet spot on set-up," O'Connell said. "The GT3 cars have finally found their set-ups and understand their cars. The three performance adjustments made to slow our Cadillac CTS.V.Rs down have pretty much taken us out of being competitive.

"We have been given 130 lbs. and received horsepower reductions since the beginning of the season," he continued. "Even if everything is perfect it will be difficult to be competitive at any of the remaining circuits. I have had a lot of success at Mid-Ohio. I've won there in the Corvette about every time we raced there and won or been at the front with Cadillac."

The Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix presented by StopTech at Mid-Ohio will run August 1 - August 3.
