Emil Bernstorff Advances To Third In The GP3 Championship At Hungaroring

Hungaroring threw up some different challenges for the Anglo-Danish driver as qualifying was disrupted by a red flag.

Just as Bernstorff had started his new tyre run the session was red flagged with 1.58 seconds to go. This caused a bit of a stampede to get to the front of the pitlane for those drivers who had not yet completed their runs. Bernstorff did a great job and qualified 6th setting fastest final sector, a testimony to the difficulty the drivers had to get heat in their tyres as they were backed up going into the final corner of the outlap. As it turned out Bernstorff was one of the very few to set a faster time just 0.25s shy of pole.

Starting 6th in race one meant starting on the inside line to turn one.
A good start saw him trying a run up the inside of Lynn but this got blocked pushing Bernstorff's right wheels unto the grass. The loss of momentum resulted in Bernstorff getting boxed-in at turn 1 but he still managed to keep his 6th position.

Despite hardly any overtaking in this race Bernstorff managed to make a great two corner move on Niederhauser on the penultimate lap, securing 5th place and good points.

Race 2 saw Bernstorff starting 4th and again boxed-in at turn one this time losing 4 positions. Again he hung in there and drove a patient race behind Stoneman, conserving his tyres and pouncing on the last lap with a move around the outside at turn one.

"We had great speed this weekend so I'm a little disappointed with my results, nevertheless moving into third position in the championship is a great boost. I'm very happy with the support from Carlin and we will work hard to prepare for Spa." said a determined Bernstorff.
