Pittsburgh Next for F2000 Field

The cars and stars of the F2000 Championship Series will make their first visit to the Pittsburgh International Race Complex this coming weekend for a doubleheader event, rounds nine and 10 of the 2014 fight for the Championship.

As was the case in 2013, Masters Class ace Tim Minor continues a dominant season, helped by his outright driving ability and a well set-up Citation chassis that should be the car to beat around Pittsburgh’s 12-turns. Minor has never been to the track before and sits in the same boat as the majority of the field, expecting to run his first laps on Friday morning.

Coming off four straight top five finishes and a victory, Thomas McGregor is perhaps Minor’s biggest adversary heading into the weekend. McGregor has found the front of the field in the Exclusive Autosport Spectrum and now seems fixed to battle Minor to the conclusion of the 2014 season.

Skylar Robinson won to start the year at Road Atlanta in April but hasn’t seen victory since. The No. 6 Eric Langbein Racing entry hopes to return to victory lane in the steel city and has been quick all year long.

Minor has a near 98 point Championship advantage on McGregor, who leads Robinson by 22 points.

With eight races completed, the 2014 season is proving to be the most competitive since 2011 for the F2000 Series – as four drivers have won races and a handful of cars at the front of the field have been quick.

In addition is Sam Beasley, who set a new track record at VIR in June before dominating Mid-Ohio race one, only to be forced to settle for a second place finish.

Alongside Beasley at Polestar, David Grant sits fifth in points, just eight points back from Beasley who hopes to gain ground on the top three this weekend.

Kevin Kopp, John McCusker, Sergio Pasian, Jim Libecco and Steve Bamford complete the top ten in the points heading into the weekend. None of those five men have ever won a F2000 race. Kopp has plenty of podium hardware, while Pasian has been quick all year.

Bamford is not only also racing in F1600, where he won at VIR, but sits just third in the season-long CellMark Paper Hard Charger standings, and could take over that lead with a few passes at Pittsburgh.

Joining Quinlan Lall at Momentum Motorsports will be newcomer and 16-year-old Jonathan Teixeira, in a RFR chassis. Teixeira brings a three-year karting history to the grid.

Alongside Formula Race Promotions’ F2000 Series at Pittsburgh will be the F1600 Formula F Championship Series. F2000 cars see a double practice day on Friday, August 1, while Saturday and Sunday each play host to a morning qualifying session and afternoon race.
