2014 NHRA: Nobile Closing in on Countdown Berth

Vincent Nobile and the NAPA/Mountain View NHRA Pro Stock team had a less-than-perfect outing during last weekend’s NHRA Sonoma Nationals but even a first round loss couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm as they inched closer to their primary goal of clinching a berth in the Countdown to the Championship. Currently ranked seventh in the tough Pro Stock class, Nobile only needs to qualify for the upcoming event in Seattle to claim a spot in the Countdown, and become one of ten drivers who will battle for the world championship over the last six races of the season.

“At the beginning of every season, our main goal is to qualify for the Countdown and thankfully, we’re going to do that again this season,” Nobile said. “Even though car counts are down a little, Pro Stock is still a very tough class and if you have a long slump, you’re at risk of not making the top ten and not being able to compete for the championship. When we came out this year with our new Camaro, we knew we were taking a bit of a risk but we honestly believed that we were going to improve our program and we have. Now, we can start to focus on battling for the championship. “

At last weekend’s Sonoma race, Nobile qualified No. 7 in the field and felt good about his round one race against rookie Jonathan Gray but a combination of factors helped to give Gray and early lead, and an eventual victory, 6.56 to. 6.57. It was just the fourth time in 15 races this season that Nobile has failed to win at least one round.

“A lot of things went wrong on that run,” said Nobile. “First, I didn’t do a great job of driving and secondly, we made a few changes to the car and that also didn’t work out like we had planned. Specifically, we were trying a different set of tires and they just weren’t the right ones for the conditions we had. We might have been better off just leaving it alone but sometimes you don’t know that until it’s too late. We get another shot this week in Seattle and I am really stoked about that. I won that race last year and I really feel like we can win it again this time.”

Nobile and the NAPA/Mountain View Tire & Auto Service team will wrap up a grueling stretch of seven races in eight weeks during this weekend’s NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Seattle. Qualifying for the NHRA Northwest Nationals will take place on Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday, Aug. 2. Final eliminations will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.
