M1 Racing Fields Four Cars At Mid-Ohio

Carlos Conde, the 2010 Star Mazda Masters-class champion, will drive a M1 Racing-prepared #23 in this weekend's doubleheader for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Conde, an investment banker from Scarsdale, N.Y. whose passion is motorsports, will be sponsored by the Monticello Motor Club. He is a founding member of that facility, which is an automotive resort and private racetrack located in Monticello, N.Y.

M1 Racing, which is based in Dallas, will field Pro Mazda cars for the reigning Pro Mazda Expert-class champion, Jay Horak of Mesa, Ariz., and promising rookie Felipe Donato of Guarani das Missoes, Brazil as well. AutoEnginuity sponsors Horak's #37, while Donato's #9 carries the colors of Top House Design and Inova Marketing. Donato made his series debut at the series' most-recent doubleheader June 28-29 in Houston.

M1 Racing will also field Walt Bowlin's Audi R8 LMS ultra in the doubleheader for the Pirelli World Challenge Championship at the same 2.25-mile, 13-turn road course this weekend. Bowlin, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., made his debut in that series July 18-20 at Honda Indy Toronto with the Tampa Bay Jaw Surgery #23. A Star Mazda Expert-class champion too (2012), he now competes in World Challenge's GT-A class.

All four cars are entered in two races — one on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Paul Mata, owner of M1 Racing, was the team manager for Team GDT when its drivers won both the Star Mazda Masters-class and the Expert-class championship with Conde and J.W. Roberts in 2010. The Masters class was for drivers over 45 and the Expert class was for drivers between 30 and 44. Today's Pro Mazda series offers an overall championship and an Expert-class title for drivers over 35. Both Horak and Conde will compete in the Expert class this weekend at Mid-Ohio.

Mata also worked with Conde when the former worked for Ferrari.

Although Mid-Ohio will be Conde's first Pro Mazda start of the year, he has been racing in the North American Ferrari Challenge Series. He was on the podium in that series' Coppa Shell championship in all four of that series' last races, including a victory at Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. Although he missed the first six races due to work commitments, he is currently fifth in the Coppa Shell championship with six races remaining.

"I competed in the Ferrari Challenge series from 2007 through 2009 and then stopped," Conde noted. "In 2010 I won the Masters-class Star Mazda championship with six victories in my class that year. From 2011 until 2013 I raced at the Monticello Motor Club. I look forward to this weekend's challenge in Pro Mazda."

Bowlin had a first and a second in the Pro Mazda Expert-class and Horak had two thirds in the same class last year at Mid-Ohio driving for M1 Racing.

Qualifying for the Pro Mazda series is slated for 12:30 p.m. on Friday, with Race 1 at 5:35 p.m. Saturday and Race 2 at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Qualifying for World Challenge's GT-A, GT and GTS classes is slated for 8 a.m. Saturday, with Race 1 at 11:55 a.m. Saturday and Race 2 at 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

Live timing and scoring is slated for promazdaseries.com and world-challenge.com.

The World Challenge races are streamed live on the series' Web site, and they'll also air on the NBC Sports network Sunday, Aug. 10 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern, with a re-run at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 16. They're available on world-challengeTV.com after the initial broadcast too.
