2014 NHRA: Schumacher On Cusp Of Second Pole In Three Weeks For U.S. Army; Hagan Leads DSR To No 2 In Funny Car With HEMI Tribute Dodge

Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team led by crew chief Mike Green and assistant Neal Strausbaugh earned the provisional No. 1 qualifying position Friday near Seattle to put the team in position to win its second Top Fuel pole in the past two weeks.

Schumacher's second run on opening day of the Northwest NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways was completed in 3.804 seconds at 318.04 mph. Two runs are scheduled for Saturday heading to the following day's championship eliminations of the season's 16th Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

In Funny Car, 2011 world champion Matt Hagan and the 426 Race HEMI 50th Anniversary Tribute Mopar Dodge Charger R/T with crew chief Dickie Venables and Michael Knudsen hold the No. 2 qualifying spot with a time of 4.100 (302.41) for DSR.

Schumacher, who could earn the 74th No. 1 qualifying start of his career, was the top qualifier two weeks ago near Denver at the start of the "Western Swing," which included a stop at Sonoma, Calif., last weekend.

That pole, however, didn't turn out well when he was upset in the opening round by rookie Jenna Haddock.

"Being No. 1 at Denver didn't pay anything, but you still always want to be the quickest car out here when eliminations begin Sunday," said Schumacher, whose first race Sunday will be the 1,000 round of his career.

During the past three races, NHRA and its tracks have featured night-time qualifying when the temperatures were drastically cooler than teams faced when they returned back to race on Sunday afternoons in the heat of the day. Friday last session at Pacific Raceways was completed by 7 p.m. and Saturday's runs are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.

"I prefer four runs in the heat for qualifying so when we come up on Sunday and we're racing in the afternoon Mike and Neal have a better idea of what to expect," he said.

Hagan, the 2013 Funny Car winner at Pacific Raceways, earned a near perfect five out of six qualifying points Saturday by being the quickest in the first session (4.121, 295.79) and second best in the last session.
