Great Win For Blomqvist At The Red Bull Ring

Tom Blomqvist takes the top step on the podium as he wins the first race of the Fia Formula 3 European Championship in Spielberg, Austria. After finishing 3rd in Fridays qualifying, Blomqvist gave himself a great opportunity for the first race and took full advantage of the clash between championship leader Ocon and Verstappen to take his fourth win in the series this season.

Saturday morning saw race one get underway and from the moment the green lights went on it was action packed with the front two drivers, Ocon and Verstappen, competing for the lead, which ended as contact was made between both in the first corner. This gave clear room for Blomqvist and team mate Antonio Giovinazzi, who were second row starters to go up ahead.

British driver, Blomqvist and Giovinazzi led the race and Blomqvist set out to build a margin on his team mate but they both had Rosenqvist on their tail as well as Verstappen who was on his way back up after his collision.

At one stage it looked as if Giovinazzi, who was just behind Blomqvist, could make an attack to take the lead, but the 20-year-old managed to keep his position after a fierce on track battle which then saw Blomqvist open a 4 second gap between him and competitors behind.

Verstappen, coming up fast behind managed to get ahead of Rosenqvist. Rosenqvist was then was also passed by Jake Dennis, leaving him in 6th.

Blomqvist took the chequered flag in first place, and another win in the championship, which moves him up into third in the standings. Giovinazzi joined Blomqvist on the podium along with Verstappen, who made a great recovery and stayed in 3rd, but later lost his result due to a penalty for ignoring track limits.

Blomqvist stated "I am happy and also slightly relieved because it has been a long time since I last was on the top step of the podium. As Esteban and Max collided in the first corner, I was able to move up into the lead. After a slight mistake, I had to be careful to keep Antonio at bay, but it all worked out fine."

The Championship continues for the rest of the weekend, with races 2 and 3 on the Sunday.
