Front Row Start at Mid-Ohio for Rising Star Racing Driver Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden is looking for his first Verizon IndyCar Series win this weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing driver made progress toward that goal on Saturday as he qualified the No. 67 Honda on the front row for Sunday’s Honda Indy 200 event.

Newgarden will start the 90-lap race outside the first row after he posted a flying fast lap time of 1:24.6787-seconds on a challenging and slick track after a downpour hit the Mid-Ohio circuit shortly before the session. He advanced through the first two rounds of qualifying to make it into the Firestone Fast Six for the fourth time this year.

The result matches his best qualifying effort of the year after having also started second in Texas. It’s also Newgarden’s best starting position at the Mid-Ohio road course.

“I really felt confident last week when we were here testing,” said Newgarden. “I thought we made a good step up from last year. We just didn’t have a handle on what we needed and I really didn’t get the most out of what we needed last year. This year I thought we had a much better package in general. I thought we were pretty good in Practice 3 but we were so tight in times that I was pretty happy that it rained because it just spread everyone out. I thought we had a good car and it was just about managing traffic. We’re pretty far down in the pit lane so we had a lot of traffic each time out. Fortunately we were just able to pull out a good lap. The car was great and we just tried to get the most out of each lap.”

Newgarden will take part in a 30-minute final warm up Sunday morning with the Honda Indy 200 set to go green at 3:50 PM ET. The race will be televised LIVE on NBC Sports Network beginning at 3:00 PM ET.
