The reigning event winner earned his best start of the season, the No. 3 spot, after four rounds of qualifying on Friday and Saturday at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

Crew chief Dickie Venables tuned Matt and the 10,000-horsepower Dodge Charger R/T to his best lap of the weekend, a 4.100-second run at 302 mph in Friday's evening session.

Venables and the Mopar team were impressive throughout qualifying, producing runs of 4.11, 4.12 and 4.13 in the heat each day.

"We have a real good hot rod right now," said Matt. "We've been down the race track a bunch of times and it's running good in the heat. The race day conditions are going to be similar to what we saw out here today and I'm really excited.

"We're hitting our stride at the right time and getting some momentum going for the Countdown. But first, I'd like to give these guys a trophy to close out the "Western Swing." Everything is really coming together nice out here so I feel pretty good about our chances on Sunday."

The NHRA Northwest Nationals is the final stop on NHRA's Western Swing that began two weeks ago near Denver and visited Sonoma, Calif., last week.

After Sunday's eliminations only two events remain until the top-10 in points standings are reset and only those ten have a chance to compete in the Countdown to the Championship. Matt and the Mopar team enter Sunday's eliminations in the seventh spot.
