2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Northwest Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 7

It seems things have turned for the better in the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher pit of Spencer Massey.

After three consecutive first-round losses, the team advanced past the first round last weekend in Sonoma, Calif., and has a consistent 10,000-horsepower dragster after four rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

"We're qualified right in the middle of the field but if you look at our qualifying runs, we have a pretty solid car here in Seattle," said Spencer. "We weren't really trying to go out there on Friday night and go low, we just wanted to make a good, solid lap and make sure we made it down the track and that's what we did.

Spencer's best lap of qualifying came during the evening session on Friday with a time of 3.815 seconds at 318 mph. The Battery Extender team led by crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara also made two 3.89-second passes in the heat of Friday and Saturday afternoons

"In the afternoon runs we just went out there and tried to get more data off of this track and we did. We ran two 3.89-second laps and we know what we can change off of those runs for Sunday afternoon and that's what's important."

A consistently quick racecar has Massey, who has two event titles this season, ready for more win lights when eliminations begin on Sunday at 11 a.m. (PT).

"I feel confident," he said. "We kind of went through a rough patch but our car is really coming around and Phil and Todd are making good decisions and putting me in a good race car. I'm ready for Sunday. There's nothing we want more than to close out the Western Swing with a trophy."

After Sunday's eliminations, only two events remain until the points are reset for the six-race Countdown to the Championship that begins in Sept. near Charlotte. Massey is currently sixth in Top Fuel points standings, less than three rounds behind DSR teammate Tony Schumacher in fourth.
